iPhone Contacts returns to last contact, not list

iPhone Contacts issues. When I use my contact is returns to the last contact not the contact list. Let me layout what I do and tell me if I can do something different. I will open contacts, search for a contact. I will call or email them. When I am done, I go back to contact, return to the search, clear the search so I am back at the list of contact. I am in the habit of closing apps when I am done, so while on the list of contacts, I close the contacts app. Days later I open contact and it goes to the last contact, not the list. What am I doing wrong?

I just tried that and I have the same result. This could be a bug and may be worth sending feedback to Apple below, but I can provide that it's best not to close out apps as a habit. You should only be doing that when an app is unresponsive, or you almost never use it. iOS keeps inactive apps frozen in the background. By closing out of the app and reopening it that causes a full refresh and drains more battery. If you leave the app open and return to the list, it won't go anywhere.

No I do not use the contacts app that much. I am only in my contacts once or twice a week.

I am like you, and "want" to force close apps, but unfortunately the smart advice is to keep all apps open in the background to save energy and avoid loss of index. Doing that will still bring you to the list nearest the last contact, but it does show the damage to the index memory when force closing apps.

I have seen other level 10s boast they have 100+ apps open in the background.

👍

Yes! I do remember your advice, but occasionally I lose half my battery from Times Radio app left in the background, (they have a bug I suspect) and I get all righteous and close about 50 apps out of spite. I had a free metronome app that did the same.
