“verifying update” locked.
up/down/power option only brings up slide to exit and cannot be used. Screen does not respond.

Nope! The force restart will work. You have to ignore the slide to power off while holding the side button. Follow these steps exactly.

  • Press and release Volume Up
  • Press and release Volume Down
  • Press and HOLD the side button until the Apple Logo appears. This may take up to 15 seconds and you have to ignore anything else on the screen during that time until you see the Apple Logo. If you do not see the Apple logo after holding the side button for 15 seconds then try again, as usually it takes a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence of the key presses correct.

Update Stalled on Verifying:

Using Force Restart, Elsewise:

"Boot Loop" being the Culprit: If you cannot fix this with a simple Force Restart, then connecting this to a computer that it self already connected to the Internet, you'd open up to correct apps, then then perform the Force Restart. Use my User Tip: How to Fix an iPhone in a Boot Loop - User Tip

To the OP and ALL those affected....

Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

THANK YOU. I had been trying to get access to my home screen for several days (luckily I have a second phone). It was only after your comment regarding trying several times in succession to get the interval correct that it finally worked and I managed to get into settings to delete the offending update. I could see the messages being sent and fortunately I had a back up access to enable me to respond, it also meant that I knew there was hope!

You are welcome. It is completely understandable that when the slide to power off prompt comes up on the screen that you would think the process has been completed. That is why I always emphasize that you have to keep holding the side button and ignore anything on the screen until you see that Apple logo. When the Apple logo is not seen after 15 seconds, you need to try again. Anyway, thanks for the update.
