iPhone asking to change Apple account password

Why is my iPhone asking me to change my Apple account password this morning? I have iphone 16, IOS 26.2. It wouldn’t open until I changed the password, it used my facial ID to allow me in and change the password.

Seems like there's a discrepancy here.

Your Apple account password has no relation to Face ID whatsoever.

Face ID is what lets you unlock your iPhone without having to enter your Passcode. Are you sure what you were asked change was the Apple account password and not the iPhone's passcode? Those are 2 different things.

Apple will never force you to change the Apple account password or even your iPhone passcode for that matter, but some corporate or school based Exchange email accounts will place profiles and restrictions in place when added to the iPhone and those may require a regular password change as a safety measure. That is a decision and requirement of the office or school IT department, not Apple.

If you explain exactly what you actually changed and where this change happened ewe can offer more specific advice.

I looked this up and I can see sporadic mentions of this from last year and some previous years, but not recently. I would say that if you have reset your password and it now works then good. I didn't see any "solutions". If it happens repeatedly then ask Apple about it, and/or provide feedback Product Feedback - Apple

Thanks for your response. It prompted me to change the Apple account password. My phone wouldn't open unless I pressed on the prompt, once I did it asked to verify my facial metrics and enter my iPhone passcode and led me to the password change. I sent an email to the Apple's fraud email to inquire about this. I did change my password again and disconnected other devices that were on the account just in case. I just hope it wasn't a phishing attack.
