Has I phone 8 become obsolete

I am 84 yrs old and my phone is critical for the usual purposes but in particular for safety and emergencies. I was instructed to install update and have not had the use of the phone since. The screen is frozen on ‘trying to install updates’ Appreciate it is an older phone (ie)I phone 8 but feel I have been cheated and would like Apple to comment

BTW I expect the 8 to be obsolete in a year or two, but even the obsolete iphone 6S got an update last week.

I believe that Apple released updates on January 26, 2026 to

  • iOS/iPadOS 12
  • iOS/iPadOS 15
  • iOS/iPadOS 16
  • iOS/iPadOS 18
  • iOS/iPadOS 26

Judging by the release notes for several of these, the big change was an update to a security certificate used for iMessages, FaceTime, and activation. Without the new certificate, those services could stop working after next January.

So Apple needs to fix the problems with the updates (I believe they have, for several of them), and also release a version of iPadOS 17 with the new certificate. (There are iPads for which iPadOS 17 is the "end of the line."). But they have about a year to do it – which should be plenty of time.
