Apple Watch "always on" display no longer works after update

After the most recent update, “always on” no longer works on my Apple Watch, so I have to raise my wrist to see it. It’s turned on in Settings. I’ve tried restarting it. Any ideas?

To rule out a software issue inside your backup data, erase the watch and pair it again, setting it up as a new device. You will only lose your created Watch faces and may have to activate the cards in your Wallet app again.

Then test the Always On feature again.
