My MacBook Air (M1, 2020) isn't updating to macOS Tahoe after successful download and installation

I have a MacBook Air (M1, 2020) on version 11.2.3 that I'm trying to update. I successfully downloaded the software update, installed macOS Tahoe onto my hard drive, my computer restarted, there were no error messages, but when I click about my computer it still says version 11.2.3. Why isn't the update working?

How did you download the software update?

Do you see, in the Applications folder, an app named "Install macOS Tahoe"?

That is the installer that you downloaded, and now you must launch that installer to actually install the upgrade. Launch it by double-clicking, then follow the prompts.

As always, make sure you have your stuff backed up to another drive.

Sometimes Apple insists on the old OS to be completely up to date before it will allow the system to be upgraded to a new major version of macOS. macOS 11.2.3 is a very old version where the latest is 11.7.10 (or there may be one slightly newer since Apple did just release an update the other day for some no longer supported versions of macOS).

If you selected a different volume for the installation, then it may have installed itself next to your current OS. In that case you may need to check the Startup Options screen to see if there is a second bootable OS on the laptop....if so, then it probably needs to finish Phase 2 of the install process.

You can try checking to see what Startup Disk options are available in the System Settings/Preferences. If you see two options for boot volumes, then you installed macOS to another volume alongside your current OS, but I'm not sure if a partially installed OS will appear on this screen which is why checking the Startup Options screen is best.

Within the Software Update System Settings/Preferences, there should be a note regarding the minor update for your current OS. Unfortunately it is easy to overlook since it is in fine print usually with a link to click on instead of a button. It will be located beneath the upgrade notice for Tahoe. You may need to scroll down a bit.
