Browser iCloud login persistently prevented

My original xxx@mac.com does not allow iCloud login via my browser, and I want to be able to do that. When it asks me to verify my email address (xxx@mac.com) it displays an alert that says 'This email address is not available. Choose a different address.' I can't get past this step, even if I use xxx@icloud.com or xxx@me.com.

Please advise.

When you say ‘original’ what do you mean? Have you stopped using it for sometime? Do you have a different Apple Account these days?

If that email address is ‘not available’ then it’s either wrong or has been disabled or locked.

My iCloud account has had the same name since I first registered with Apple (before iCloud), at the very start of the service (c.25 years ago). The xxx@mac.com email is the only address I've ever used, and I still buy apps/content with it most weeks.

It is not locked, blocked or inactive. I just can't get onto the browser based cloud service.
