F1TV activation on ATV fails if Apple ID password contains certain characters

Not sure where to post this, but it appears that you can’t create an F1TV account through your Apple ID if your Apple ID password does not conform to F1TV requirements. You can reproduce this by selecting the ACTIVATE option in the F1TV app and if your Apple ID password has a character that is not allowed by F1TV the activation steps will fail. Surely this is an oversight? You shouldn’t have to change your Apple ID password just to activate F1TV via the Apple TV F1 app.

Useful information for any community member who is confused by the F1TV app. Here is what you do to make it work on Apple TV.

  1. Download and install the F1TV app on your Apple TV.
  2. On the main screen press the Subscribe button.
  3. On the next page, in the Yellow section, click the Activate button.
  4. Next you get a Register page. Note this is where the confusion was at least for me. (on the previous page it says to sign in with your Apple TV account). On this registration page you are creating a new F1 account. This page has nothing to do with ATV or Apple.
  5. So here on this Register page, if you don't already have an F1 account, create a new email and password you want associated with F1.
  6. Enter your birthdate.
  7. Note it looks like if you already have an F1 account, you can login instead. I did not do this because I didn't have a previous relationship with F1.
  8. So enter the data required and press Register.
  9. It should complete your registration with successful creation of a "full account". If you get a Oops! dialog box, as long as it shows success, just ignore the Oops! box and Dismiss it.
  10. You will then be taken to the main page again with the QR code. So now you want to start the link process. Scan the QR code or enter the f1.com/tv URL on your device with a Web browser. Log in to formula1 with the email and password you just created in step 8 above. After logging in, enter 6 letter code on your TV screen.
  11. Next it will check your Apple TV subscription to make sure you have a subscription to Apple TV that enables you to have access to F1. There are two steps to this process.
  12. You have to log in to your Apple account using your Apple ID and password.
  13. You also then are asked to go to f1.com/applecode where you are asked to enter a specific code that enables you to link your apple account to the f1 account.
  14. After all of the above, you should see that your F1TV app on your Apple TV will be properly linked and you will have full access to the content.

I hope this helps the community. Oh and for Rudegar, if you don't know, it's a pretty big deal that Apple has a 5 year agreement with Formula 1 and as part of that any Apple user who has a valid Apple TV paid subscription gets full access to Formula 1 TV (F1TV apple TV app). Given that you didn't know about this, it might be better to educate yourself instead of a non-value added comment.
