MacBook Pro: Cannot scan, scanner not found

I have MacBook Pro (Tahoe 26.2 - is that relevant?). I can no longer scan, because when I click on Mission Control, which is how I used to locate my scanner, it tells me there are no windows available. When I go into settings to look for printers and scanners, there's no mention of a scanner, but I don't think there ever was - I would just get to it from Mission Control. I have a terrible feeling that this may be a result of my cat getting onto my keyboard and accidentally (or even deliberately) pressing keys.

It had never occurred to me to use Mission Control for scanning purposes, but everyone gets accustomed to their own workflows and it's understandably distressing to have to adjust to new ways of doing things.

I would not even know how to use Mission Control for scanning. I use Preview to scan: Scan a document or image in Preview on Mac - Apple Support but as you know there are other ways.
