Mac Pro (2019) upgrades for Adobe app performance

I own a Mac Pro, 2019, with 3.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon W processor and a AMD Radeon Pro 580X Graphics 8GB. with 48GB of Memory. What upgrades are possible so the system runs faster? I am a photographer and find that the latest versions of Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop do not run optimally anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes. unneeded aftermarket software like anti-virus, so-called "cleaning" apps, and over-hyped client-side VPNs (those not issued by and employer for access to work systems) can drag down performance instead of "helping you protect."

If you are not sure what may be on your Mac Pro, there is a safe, secire way to show us. If you want a data-driven evaluation in this setting where we can neither see nor touch your computer, please post an EtreCheck report. We can quickly and within the limitations of these forums help you determine what issues are at play without our playing a protracted game of "20 Questions" with you that could go on for days.

EtreCheck Pro is available here:

The free version will do nicely for this purpose, although the app is worthy of our financial support.

We can see hard data about drive performance, software interferences, and RAM usage. Etrecheck is the development of a long-serving and trusted ASC contributor. It is a reporting app, not a "fix-it” app, expressly for displaying information in these forums to help us help you remotely. It will not reveal any personal or secure information.

Please see this excellent user tip on how to post long text reports like EtreCheck's into a forum response:

Please post the entire report unexpurgated. What seems insignificant to a new Etrecheck user can speak volumes to those of us who have reviewed thousands of those reports.

Editing actions in the Develop module are slow and images take longer than normal to populate in the Library module. Using LR15.1.1 and PS26.4.0 on a MacPro using Sonoma 14.8.4 - all are the latest versions. Other information you asked in my post or in other conversations.

Among other things, consider the possibility that with the size of your catalog you may be pushing Lightroom too hard.

  • Have you done Optimize Catalog? Recently? Ever?
  • Are you using Adobe Cloud?
  • Check Preview size; with the size of your Library it may be time to reduce it.
  • Check LR Performance settings, esp. Camera RAW cache. It may need to be increased.

FYI, your link is missing the ".html" portion so the site doesn't load properly resulting with "File Not Found" error message leaving the central portion of the page blank....the site is still navigable. I'm providing the corrected link here for others:

FREE space on the Boot drive is essential for appropriately fast operation. if you have 20 percent or more free, that line of questioning is a dead end.

Etrecheck report that you can post here is already laundered of all personally-identifiable information. Even the names you have given your drives are anonymized. Much thought has gone into making posting such reports, by following the internal directions or those given here, perfectly safe. Thousands of such reports from others have already been posted on these forums, without incident. Given how vigilant the moderators are about your privacy, That shows how thorough the Author of Etrecheck has been.

If you choose to purchase it, the add-on package compares the performance of your computer to performance of comparable Macs that ran Etrecheck reports anonymously, to give you an idea of where you stand. It does not offer any substantial ways to change that performance, however.

Changing your Mac's Performance requires a careful analysis, and multiple readers typically gives at least some ways to improve performance.

-------

Upgrades Enhancing your Device's Speed:

A. Upgrading your Device:

Other than bug fixes(from updates), hardware upgrades really wouldn't make it run faster, as much of it is soldered into the LogicBoard. But, if faulty, then it may be replaceable.

B. Aging Device:

As time proceeds, your drive is reading and writing on an on, and that will slow things down.

C. Time of Year:

Using an application may be slower at certain times of year, such as holidays for back to school seasons, or during current events for donations(i.e. elections) --servers may be taken up, and that would be nothing on your end, or than participation by visiting the sites.

D. Remove Login Items:

As for other items, I would look at Login Items, and make cure that nothing is running at login, as it may slow a few things down.  Go Here: Change Users & Groups Login Items Preferences on Mac - Apple Support

What version of macOS are you running and what versions of Adobe LRC & PS are you using?

What is the capacity of your system drive & how much free space is on it?

What do you mean by "not run optimally anymore?" What problem(s) are you seeing?

I have an i9 iMac Radeon Pro 570X 4GB with 32GB RAM running Monterey 12.7.6 w/LRC 13.5.1 and PS 23 & 24 and it purrs. The Adobe apps should be running fine on your Mac Pro.

Thanks for these ideas TheLittles. I'm trying to avoid replacing my Mac Pro if possible. When I invested in it I was told that I would be able to make upgrades over time versus the iMac which requires replacements. I've researched and now understand that the swap by Apple from Intel to the M chip means I now own a machine that is out of date. That's tough news for me and before I make another serious investment in a new device I'd like to understand what options are available to me. Another Community member suggested I download EtreCheck Pro for an analysis and then post the report. I'm going to do that in the hopes that there are action steps I can take to improve performance. I will also now follow up on your suggestion to check Login Items. Thanks a lot!

If I am understanding your question (and I may not be??) I have 4.81 TB available my 8tb MacPro drive with 18.5GB used. I also have numerous external drives connected to the MacPro storing @1 million images of my full portfolio. I can go into those details for you/those in this conversation if needed - most are in OWC Thunderbay ports (spinning drives) and some are installed inside of the MacPro (those are SSD drives). To help explain why I have this set up: I have all my original images backed up on either SSD or spinning drives which is further backed up to the Cloud via BackBlaze.

Transferring to a New Mac:

Going Intel-to-Silicon

I'll always keep my 2018 MBP, as it can be used for older macOS versions. I cancelled its AppleCare+ a few years back. Being it is Intel-based, I can install lots of older software, including older versions of software has now changed to subscription-only (i.e. VMWare Fusion). As for getting software back, I contacted the developers. For one, Microsoft was fond enough to grant me a new install license, being that they said "You OWN this software."

As for the Transfer, It Comes Down to:

A. Transferring Items Manually.

You'd export items to an external drive, and then import it to the new Mac; use cloud storage; or through a crossover cable.

Or...

B. Use Migration Assistant:

Other than manually transferring they, you do so the traditional way (which you seem to want to avoid): Use Migration Assistant to back up your Mac with a Time Machine Backup, and then import items as a whole. Once imported, decide what to do from there.

Greetings and thanks for listing valuable check points. To respond:

- I optimize my Catalog regularly

  • Yes. I use Adobe Cloud
  • I have "discard all previews" in all Catalog settings set to erase on a weekly basis.
  • I will xck the Camera RAW cache - that's a good idea - what other LR Performance settings do you recommend I look into for faster performance.

I appreciate your taking the time to weigh in!
