I have an original external magnetic keyboard for my iPad Air 2019, but when I connect it, the software keyboard pops up.
I have already cleaned both connectors, restarted, reinstalled but it still doesn't work. It worked for years before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, I can't figure out why.

If you are using a Smart (folio) keyboard, the issue that you describe is typical of a faulty folio keyboard. The electrical connections that pass though the flexible fabric hinges eventually fracture - this usually resulting in errors and/or intermittent behaviours such as those that you observe.
The Smart folio keyboard itself is not repairable. The only remedy is replacement of the keyboard.

Given its age, you may struggle to find a replacement Apple folio keyboard for your iPad Air3. Apple typically only carry accessories for their current range of device models.
You might consider looking at third-party retailers for a compatible replacement - as they are far more likely to access to any available accessories for older model devices. Your favourite search-engine (such as Google) may be your best option.
