Final Cut Pro Blade Tool cutting before the playhead

Please could somebody help me I've been trying to sort this out for over four hours now and can't get anywhere! Basically usually when I want to split a video clip I click on the file that I'm wanting to split so it has a yellow rectangle around it. I then place my play Head where I want to split the file. I then use CMD B to split the clip. This usually works and I've done it thousands of times however for some reason now when I do this it's splitting the clip but further back from where my playhead is. Also I've noticed that the playhead seems to have turned to red and I'm sure it's usually yellow unless I'm losing the plot completely this evening!

I've tried turning scrubbing on and off to see if that would make any difference but it still does the same thing.

I have deleted all the preferences. I've also started a brand-new library, event and project, but the same thing is still happening.

Please could you help?

Thanks,

Rachel

A screenshot might be elucidating.

There’s the playhead and there’s the skimmer (if activated). The skimmer takes precedence, so if you have both and press Command-B to blade, it will blade at the skimmer, not the playhead position.

You can turn the skimmer on or off by pressing the letter s

Thank you for the screenshot, it does explain everything!

Your timeline is zoomed in very far, so much so that the grey area I marked with two arrows is ONE FRAME, one single image.

So is each space between consecutive "ticks" at the top of the timeline.

You can't cut video mid-frame. Your playhead is parked in the middle of the frame, so FCP is blading before said frame. It is all working correctly.

It is cutting on the frame properly. Your playhead is in-between frames. Unfortunately, FCP allows you to drag your playhead to audio samples rather than lock it to frames, which I find really annoying. We should be able to turn off the audio sample level and lock into video frame boundaries, IMHO.

The left/right arrow keys will move you from frame to frame. So with your playhead where it is, hit either left or right arrow keys, you'll see where the frames actually are.

I did a short clip to illustrate this.

Hi Terry, thanks for your response. Apologies fr the delay! Before I saw your message I actually uninstalled Final Cut Pro and reinstalled it. The problem seems to be fixed (although I am still not sure that it wasn't just user error!!!) It's strange that it just seemed to change from one day to the next. At the moment it is working.

Thanks very much to all of you who took the time to respond. Much appreciated!

It IS frame accurate, and that is all that it can be in regards to video. You are confusing "frame accurate" to what I'd call "pixel accurate". But whenever a frame is more than one pixel wide in the timeline, this is going to happen.

You simply can't cut at half a frame, or one third of a frame.

Perhaps you'd prefer the playhead to only move in whole frame increments, ie. from here (frame 0)

to here (frame 1)

Whenever the playhead is at an exact frame boundary, the cut will appear exactly where the playhead is.

Now in the next image, the playhead is somewhere in the middle of frame 1 - but the current frame is STILL frame 1. You cannot blade a 1.3 frames. It will blade at the start of frame 1.

And being 25fps or 30fps just change how many frames there are in a second. In 25fps each frame lasts for 1/25s; in other words, you can only blade at increments of 1/25s. There is no video in 25fps with a duration of 1/100s, for example; or 21.01s, for that matter, because a video has be an integer number of frames.

Ben explained very well, I think. FCP lets you move the playhead in subframe increments, but video exists only in frames.

For example, you may have 30 frames per second. If the playhead is at frame 23 of those 30 frames, it doesn't matter if it is near the beginning or near the end of the thumbnail, it is always on the same frame. Imagine, if you will, a traditional film and an actual physical blade. You don't want (and in the digital case you can't) cut half a frame. You would only cut in the red lines (image courtesy of grok; red dashed lines by me...)

Thanks for getting back to me! I did try using S but it doesn't solve a problem with skimming on or off. It's still cuts before the playhead (although in slightly different places!) I've done a screenshot. I did notice a couple of other things that happened when it started that there's a kind of grey bar along the timeline that when I click somewhere there's a grey selection over each side of the playhead - I presumed it was showing a frame or something like that. When I use the Arrow keys, it seems to move by a second. The timestamp in the image is showing normally but quite often it shows in purple which I can't remember seeing before. As you can tell I'm not an expert with FCP at all, however I have done thousands of edits like this without an issue! Thanks again for your time

Thanks again. I did wonder if that's what it was but if I zoom out so I can see the whole timeline and follow the same process it still cuts before the playhead. I took some more screenshots to illustrate this.

I know I have been using it by zooming in quite a bit in the past. However, it is still cutting behind the playhead even when I'm really zoomed out (which of course is not accurate enough to edit as I can't see the audio waveform to cut between words)

*sorry I used the word "cursor" in image 02 instead of "playhead"!!

I zoomed in for image 03 just so you can see where the cut is in relation to the playhead.

Hi Ben, thank you very much for the time you took to respond and for the video. Really appreciate it. I must admit I come from an audio editing world, I was a sound engineer and have used Pro Tools for 25 years so I'm very used to being able to just click and make an edit wherever on the audio waveform I want to!

I'm just confused because I have been doing basic video editing for a long time on Final Cut Pro and I've never had this issue before. Just seems to mean that I can't edit and make cuts where I need to now in the video which a couple of days ago I was doing!

I do remember several years ago this did happen, but I don't know what I did to rectify it unfortunately!

Again, thanks very much for your time, Rachel

I hear what you are saying, it's just strange as it has been working that way for years. This particular video is 25 fps. On the first of the three stacked screenshots I zoomed right out so I could see the whole timeline and wherever I clicked and used CMD B it cut before the playhead. It just makes doing accurate editing now impossible. I'm just confused as to what has changed as my way of working has been the same for years and I was able to do very accurate editing even just 3 days ago!

Thanks very much to both of you for time I really appreciate it
