Recover data from MacBook SSD with external enclosure

Do any of you experts know if I can get an external SSD enclosure for one of these types of SSD in order to recover data as the MacBook no longer functions. If so please let me know what you would recommend.

Thanks for your time!

No, I am not aware of any adapters or enclosures for that proprietary Apple SSD. OWC typically provide such items, but they have never released any enclosures for it.

If your laptop has failed, then more than likely the failure was due to that SSD with everything else being equal. That particular SSD has an extremely high rate of failure. Usually you will notice the failure by the system having a Kernel Panic when waking the laptop from sleep, or with a blinking folder with question mark when powering on the laptop.

Your only option would be to find another 2016 or 2017 MBPro non-touchbar model laptop to use as a donor assuming the SSD is healthy.

FYI, if the SSD is failing, then try Option Booting the laptop which may give the SSD enough time to go ready as it searches for other bootable volumes.

Also, you should provide more backstory details regarding the failure of your laptop. If the failure of the laptop is not due to liquid damage, then my guess is the SSD is failing or possibly has completely failed......that is how often this SSD will fail.

re: < MacBookPro13,1> or < MacBookPro14,1>

Macs with T1 chip 2016 and 2017 your two-thunderbolt model.

Apple’s proprietary SSD in that non-touchbar models of MBP 2016 or 2017—known to have a high failure rate.

Note—2016 or 2017 non-touchbar model which uses yet another unique proprietary Apple SSD connector.

OWC which sells upgrade kits but does not offer any adapters or enclosures for that SSD.

Maybe Apple alone could help(?)

I Do not know about the non-touchbar models...(?)

compared to the 4-Thunderbolt 2016 & 2017 models which had Touchbar :

Both 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros with Touchbar have a Life Boat connector

2016-2017 Touchbar MBPro, then Apple service tool store (Not a AASP) may be able to access the data stored on the SSD integrated into the Logic Board by using their special LifeBoat connector/device.

AASP= Apple Authorized Service Provider
