Komoot app $4.99/week subscription via Apple

My husband subscribed to Komoot app for biking two or three months ago.

We just saw via his Apple subscriptions page that we’ve been billed 4.99 PER WEEK and canceled the subscription immediately.

I do not see any package at that price on the Komoot website and Komoot maintains that "Subscriptions purchased through the Apple App Store are managed and billed by Apple, so prices there can differ from what you see on our website".

Is Apple really independently pricing apps???

I see an in-app purchase starts at $3.99 on the web site but $4.99 via Apple.

I am not a developer but my understanding is that Apple would obviously wish to charge a developer for hosting its app on its store. Some developers can provide in-app purchases directly and might then be able to charge less since they are not having a cut of their charge being taken by Apple. In other words, it costs more via Apple not because Apple is charging more but because the developer is charging more when a purchase is made through Apple.
