iPhone 17 Pro Max display grey on video after replacement

Title: iPhone 17 Pro Max – grey screen for 2–3 seconds when playing videos after display replacement

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a strange issue with my iPhone 17 Pro Max and I’m trying to understand if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Recently I had an accident and my display was replaced. In Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History it shows “Display – Genuine Apple Part.”

However, after the display replacement I started noticing something unusual while playing videos.

Whenever I start a video (for example in Instagram Reels), the screen becomes grey / washed out for about 2–3 seconds, and then suddenly the colors and brightness return to normal. Before the display replacement this never happened.

Today I contacted Apple Support and they asked me to enable Color Filters in Accessibility settings as part of troubleshooting. I enabled it, but the issue is still happening.

So currently:

• Display shows Genuine Apple Part

• Apple Support troubleshooting did not fix the issue

• Videos show grey colors for 2–3 seconds before becoming normal

On top of that, my battery health is already showing 99% at only 86 cycles, which is also disappointing for a relatively new device.

I wanted to ask the community:

• Has anyone else experienced grey / washed-out screen for a few seconds when starting videos?

• Could this be related to HDR switching or display calibration after replacement?

• Should I push Apple for another repair or device replacement?

Any advice or similar experiences would really help.

Battery and Display and service history

With iPhone 11 models and later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), using iOS 15.2 and later, you can go to Settings > General > About for the parts and service history of your iPhone. You can also find out if the display has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, "Genuine Apple Part" will appear next to Display.

  • An Unknown Part  message will appear if the display installation is incomplete or if the display:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine display
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

An additional message might appear that says "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone." This means that Apple has updated the device information maintained for this iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products.

If your iPhone's parts have been previously replaced, repaired, or serviced by an unauthorized service provider, it's worth noting that Apple may decline to provide service for your device. The decision to refuse service will depend on the specific components that were affected by the unauthorized service.
