How to fix Apple search functions not working on iOS 26.4.2?

ALL APPLE SEARCH FUNCTIONS NOT WORKING

currently on iOS 26.4.2 and for the past two-three weeks all my search functions whether it’s my spotlight search, internal key word email search, iMessage key word search, or photo keyword search. Anything related to a core Apple application can no longer search. I’ve tried numerous ways to fix this issue i.e hard reset, changing the langue then hard reset, shutting off all Siri settings, I’ve even had a full iOS update since this issue and that did not resolve it. I recently purchased more iCloud space thinking the back up was the issue but that also did not fix this issue. Any help would be much appreciated! I use my phone for work and the search features are extremely helpful to me so I’ve been struggling without them.

Search issues are not always the fault of the iOS update!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Same here! I'm on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 26.4.2, and the search is no longer doing its thing. I used to use it very frequently for quick money conversations (such as from EUR to USD) or quick math. What happened and why is the search no longer useful? It used to be my favorite Apple feature.

No one could possible know why search isn't working for you. This is a user to user only forum. I can tell you that immediately after an iOS update, search usually isn't available until the phone finished indexing the millions of bytes of data. Depending on how many GB of data on a phone, that can take from a few hours to a few days.

In my case, Search is fully functional on iOS 26.4.2 (on two iPhone and two iPads), but I updated immediately when it was released on April 22nd.

Have you performed a Force Restart (which I do after EVERY iOS update) --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Update: I had a session with senior support. I shared my screen and he witnessed the issue. He asked me to try multiple settings, including resetting all settings, and nothing worked. I mentioned that other people were facing the same problem, so quickly checked and he confirmed others have reported this. He is owning the case and is communicating with engineering to find out more. I am hopeful this can lead to something positive to resolve the issue for good. I’ll keep you posted.

More on this issue. I sadly discovered the issue is also present when searching in the email app. This is not an indexing issue. Indexing speeds up the search, this not working at all.

Here is a workaround for searching apps. Open App Store and search for the App there. The search works and it will show the Open button to open the app right away. It is slower but at least it is faster than scrolling in the App Library.

To all of the people saying OP is attributing this to the update version... they are not necessarily. *** The OP just gave their iOS version for context.

Also, while seemingly not specifically related to an update version, it did seem that the update process is what triggered the behavior.

Having similar issues on two iPhone devices (15 Pro and 17 Pro)

One device (17 Pro), the search is fully as described by most here... search will not work at all (Spotlight, within messages, other places that have what seems to be spotlight-style functionality).

The other device (15 Pro) is just impacted in Messages, it seems. Especially when attempting to text an individual or group by name via the new text option. It sometimes work, sometimes does not. Have to try repeatedly. Even waiting for 5+ minutes in scenarios where it was not populating did not eventually populate the name. Seems like it is either going to work within 1-3 seconds, or it isn't at all. Not really the same as most issues described here, but started around the same time and is *somewhat similar*.

Have also done steps such as (waiting 60 seconds or more between each change):

  • Change language to something other than English and back
  • Toggle off Show Related options in Search Settings and back on
  • Rebooting/Shutting down device through various methods
  • Updating all apps

Same issue persists.

I did not see the 26.5 update until today, will test this out a bit later today.

I conducted a thorough search of this forum using the term 'Quick Search Spotlight after iOS update' and uncovered numerous posts detailing similar issues across various iOS updates. This suggests that iOS updates may not consistently be the root cause. Below are a handful of examples extracted from over 1,000 search results:

The above issues span many models, and iOS updates suggest that many are device-specific and erroneously attributed to iOS updates.

I'm having the same issue. Everything was working fine yesterday, and today all search functionality stopped working. Basic Apple Support was not helpful. They recommended a restore of the iphone and if that doesn't work, escalate the issue to Senior Support. I might give it a try if that could lead to helping everyone facing the same.

I think the point here is to try and understand and remedy a problem that seems to be quite widespread. (It’s noted elsewhere, not just these forums.)

Per the earlier posts, many of us have experienced the problem PRIOR to updating to a new iOS. I’m not sure what caused the phone to start indexing and, apparently, get stuck in the process of doing so. (Yes, we’ve all tried a hard reset.) Hopefully, others will report the issue to Apple, as well, and if we get some helpful feedback from Apple support, we can share it here…

Issues which are not widespread, nor do they affect everyone who updated their iPhone are harder for Apple to address. As I mentioned, search is working as expected on every device we have on iOS 26.4.2. I don't doubt you and some others have an issue. I do think if it was really widespread, this forum, the most visited forum in the world for all things iPhone would be blowing up with people complaining, but it's not. And the tech press would be all over this if it was a widespread issue, but they're not.

I sincerely hope it can be resolved for you and anyone else who is having this issue.
