Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon. Epson printer.

This popped up on my Mac: Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon. It updated overnight, and I checked my Epson Software (screenshots below). I am running macOS 26.5 now. Any suggestions for a new Epson app that will work?

I thought I found one in the app store (Printer App: Smart Printer), downloaded it, only to find it was $4.99 a month. I really don't want to pay anything.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

EcoTank ET-4850 Supports AirPrint.

Which means vendor drivers are unnecessary for common printing tasks.

Update the printer firmware, if the printer has that. Remove the vendor drivers. Use AirPrint.

You guessed wrong lol. I use the printer a lot, but that was the first time a message had appeared.

I didn’t ask about using the printer. I asked if you actually use that app? Is it necessary for you, personally? It may provide some feature you like, but it likely isn’t necessary to either print or scan from an Epson AIO. Most Epson devices are AirPrint and ICA compatible, thus needing neither a printer nor scanner driver.

Did you bother reading the thread?

  • Rosetta 2 is not going away until macOS 28 – although you will get warnings when running Intel code under the latest versions of Tahoe, and when running Intel code under macOS 27 (Golden Gate).
  • Any updates will have to come from Epson. Nobody here is going to reverse-engineer an Epson driver shipped in machine-code-only form, and create a new Apple-Silicon-native driver for you.
  • Epson has had plenty of time to come out with Apple-Silicon-native software. Apple released the first round of Apple-Silicon-based Macs in November 2020 (nearly six years ago). You could rent prototype Mac minis that had iPhone chips inside even before that.
  • To the extent that your primer supports AirPrint (About AirPrint - Apple Support), you may be able to do without Epson's software.

In my Epson Software folder there are only two apps that are listed as “universal” meaning they will work with Apple silicon Macs natively. Those two are Epson Scan 2 (Epson’s scanning app) and Epson Software Updater. The important one, Event Manager, is still Intel. Event Manager sets options like where a scan will be saved, what format it will be saved as, etc. We can only hope Epson will update those apps before macOS 28 when Rosetta 2 starts going away.

As already stated your printer will continue to work it is just that some of the printer apps like scan from printer will no longer work unless that app is upgraded to universal file type.

As an alternative for scanning, the third-party VueScan app supports the Epson EcoTank ET-2760, if the Epson printer firmware doesn’t avail itself of the scanning capabilities available within AirPrint.

Hello,

I may be a bit out of context here but I, too, have had problems with printing on an EPSON ET-4950. I did use the Epson driver which was supposed to be suitable for my current system (Golden Gate 7.0.1) but in the end, after removing and reinstalling the printer I have left it set at Epson ET-4950 Series Airprint. The result is that while I can select a number of print quality options when printing Word docs, when printing pgn or jpeg. images, I am limited to medium or best quality. So as far as I can see it's a driver problem.

I did ask an Epson support person about this problem and received the following reply:

"I checked with our tech team, and they let me know this issue isn’t related to Epson. It’s an Apple printing system issue. They recommend contacting Apple Support, who can help restore your printer

settings on your Mac. The quality preferences are missing because your Mac doesn’t allow the Epson driver settings, although they’re available in the third-party Word app. that is why when you print from MAC JPG or PNG you don't find options for quality, but when you print from word you get the correct settings"

That wasn't much help to me so here I am.

Does anyone know if Epson is still doing applications for Intel-based apps? And forgive me if I'm repeating here, if rosetta 2 is staying until macOS 28, would it not be working with my current printer application?

P.S. – Part of the reason that Apple made macOS pop up that message is to encourage users to put pressure on the developer (in this case, Epson) to update the software in question before macOS 28 comes out.

That gives them about a year and a half to do it – more than enough time.

Of course, sometimes application developers just abandon older software. That happened a lot with 32-bit games when Catalina came out. Game developers knew the end of 32-bit support was coming … they just didn't bother to do anything about it.

For printing : Just open whatever document, photo, or webpage you want to print, and press ⌘P (or go to File > Print).
Use Image Capture — it's already on your Mac (search for it with Spotlight, ⌘Space, type "Image Capture").

That would not be addressing the issue raised, which is a very old build of supporting software from Epson triggering deprecation messages in recent macOS versions.

Epson is slowly upgrading their software. At the moment, the only Epson product I own is a V850 scanner. All of the software for it was originally Intel only. These are the apps on the drive in the Applications folder, or have 'Epson' in the file name:

Copy Utility

Epson Scan 2

Epson Scan 2 Utility

Epson ScanSmart

Epson Software Updater

Event Manager

Uninstaller

Using Epson Scan 2

Epson Scanner Monitor

EPSON Scanner

Of those, the Copy Utility, Event Manager and Uninstaller are still Intel only. And compared to the previous software installer I saved from 2024, they really haven't changed. The Universal apps were already Universal then.

Doesn't change the fact they still need to update/upgrade the Intel only apps. Some vendors get on it right away, others lag (like X-Rite, who always wait for the last second), and others will ignore their app(s) and customers.
