Mac Studio Display black

My Mac studio display, after a recent update, pulses for about five seconds then turns off. How do I get my computer working again?

Hi,

To resolve the pulsing and shutdown issue on your Apple Studio Display following a recent update, you must perform a hardware reset by disconnecting the display’s power cable from the electrical socket, waiting at least five to ten seconds, and then plugging it back in.

Because the Studio Display lacks a power button and runs its own internal firmware via the A13 Bionic chip, this power cycle is the primary method to clear post-update glitches. If the display pulses but does not fully power on after reconnecting, wait up to 30 seconds for the firmware to resume updating or initialize.

If the issue persists after the reset:

  • Check the Thunderbolt Cable: Ensure the cable is firmly seated; users report that shorter, certified Thunderbolt 4 cables resolve intermittent connection drops that cause the display to restart.
  • Update Firmware Manually: If the screen shows the three dots and a restore URL, connect the display to a Mac and check for the latest firmware update in System Settings > Displays.
  • Contact Apple Support: If the display continues to cycle off and on, the internal logic board may require a "Software Revive" or replacement under warranty, as this can indicate a failed firmware download or hardware fault. Contact Apple Support - Apple Support
