Contacts search issue After update to iOS 27

After updating my iPhone from iOS 26 to iOS 27, the Contacts search function stopped working. My contacts are still there, but when I try to search for a contact by name, the search does not return the correct results.

Could you please advise how I can fix this issue? Is this a known problem with iOS 27?

I am unable to replicate the issue that you describe with iOS 27 and the Contacts Search function.

If your iPhone is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated or post-update software issue:

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPhone settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPhone settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPhone to factory settings:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assist with troubleshooting:

I found a simple solution after searching the entire world,

Just go to Setting, Your account name, Icloud, select option see all, select contacts and disable icloud sync for some time ( may be for a month ), select the option to "Keep on this phone" .

Then what happen is all the contacts will be stored in your iphone and search will become fast since no more searching the index in icloud.

Lets have this option of disable for some days till apple releases the new ios 27.5 and hope that it will get solution for this, ( remember before you change the phone, sync the contacts again with iclode and then change your phone )

When you update your phone, your phone has to work behind the scenes to reindex the millions upon millions of bytes of data. That means rebuilding all the databases on your phone. It wouldn't be unusual for searching for contacts to not work until the index process completes, so just give this a couple days (depending on how much data there is on your phone) to complete and the search function should work again.

Backups are important. Anyone that needs to export their contact list can do so by opening the "Contacts" app on your device, go to all lists, and long press on the list you want to export. ***Note: If the source of the list is something that is synchronized with an external account, you won't need to export these lists as they are part of their respective accounts. Your iCloud account and your Sim/device lists are the accounts you can export. They will export as .vcf and will contain the contact photos.

Remember, on each device, when you set up that device, you can add more contact accounts. This is important as they will synchronize with their respective service(iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, yahoo!, Aol., Outlook.com, etc) for that device. Contacts created there will live there. This is why you cannot export them. If you setup multiple device with additional accounts, those contact will on

Possible temporary fix for someone to try: Before upgrading to iOS 27, first export your iCloud contact list and save it for all contacts. You need a backup, always! Turn off iCloud sync for your contacts in the settings for that device. It may give you a warning about removing the contact from your device and other devices and this is a personal choice that you make. ***If you are not comfortable doing this, STOP and wait for the fix. If you are good with this and have your backups, continue. Upgrade to iOS 27 and check your contacts to see what carried over. Not sure, however, it should only be the additional accounts(iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, yahoo!, Aol., Outlook.com, etc) for that device. Add the additional accounts if they are not there. The iCloud list may show up but this is the list that is not usable at this time. You can only select one of the list to use for contacts until  fixes the issue.

All of this is based on you signing in with the same iCloud account and is per device.

Has anyone from Apple shared the solution yet? Do they know about this issue? The new iOS 26 update patch does not solve the problem, btw.

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple doesn't respond here. If you want an answer from Apple directly, start by contacting support. There's a link at th bottom left of every page of the forums.

I'm having the same issue and tomorrow will be two weeks since I've updated to 27. Any suggestions?

You're assuming it's something that is Apple's responsibility to fix. Given that comparatively few people are reporting it, even if it is a bug in iOS 27, it's going to be fairly far down the priority list.

You and everyone who has this problem should report it to Apple:

The more people who say something, the more attention is might get.

Like LotusPilot, I can't replicate this.

Do you mean it's not working at all? Or do you mean it's returning different results than you expected? Can you give an example (anonymized).

Contacts search is working, but it has become extremely slow since I updated from iOS 26 to iOS 27. I have approximately 10,000 contacts, and when I search for someone, it now takes about 10–15 seconds for the results to appear.

Before the iOS 27 update, Contacts search was almost instant, even with the same number of contacts, and I never had this issue.

The “Optimizing Search/Indexing” process has already completed, so this does not appear to be related to ongoing indexing. I have also restarted the iPhone, but the issue remains.

This problem started immediately after updating to iOS 27. Please advise if this is a known issue and whether there is a fix or workaround.
