iTunes 10 breaks Firefly Media Server / mt-daapd

iTunes 10 does not work with Firefly Media Server / mt-daapd on my local network. iTunes 9.2.1 worked fine. iTunes 10 will fetch the playlists, but will not fetch any media files.

rsp svn-1696
daap svn-169
Mac OS X 10.6.4

It's not the server software, iTunes 9.2.1 still works fine with it on another Mac and Songbird with the daapd client plugin also plays music from the server fine when iTunes 10 on the same Mac will not.

Is there any way to fix this, if not, how do I downgrade back to iTunes 9.2.1 safely? Right now it is refusing to install due to a newer version installed and I don't want to proceed until I know how to do so safely. Thanks.

I wish I had found this thread a couple of days ago. The main reason that I purchased my Drobo FS and 3 new 3 TB hard drives was to move my iTunes collection from my first generation Drobo that is attached to my Windows 7 laptop, and make it available on the network.

Drobo suggests a cloud server called PogoPlug, but it doesn't work they way they describe. Besides, there isn't a DroboApp for it. So, I installed firefly a couple of days ago, and have spent several hours playing with the configurations, trying to get it to work with my Mac mini, with no luck.

I hope this gets fixed with the next release of iTunes.

Hi,

I've upgraded to Lion and iTunes 10.5.3 (3) and that's where the problem started!

All OK under Snow Leopard.

No NAS or other external HD with my library, just an Intel iMac G5 running Firefly and an old Pinnacle Soundbridge M400PX to access my iTunes library.

Installed Lion and it said Firefly is a PowerPC app and cannot now be used.

Any thoughts on how this vanilla set-up can be put back to full running order?

PS - I'm no techie, so simple terminologuy would be welcomed.

Hi Alastair,

I'll start with two remarks:

1) for your case, iTunes is not the problem [iTunes is not streaming to your Pinnacle, or you are not using iTunes to access to DAAP server => you should not post in this thread]

2) your iMac cannot be "Intel" and "G5" [it would have been a G5, you would not have any problem]

Indeed, your problem is OS X Lion in which Apple decided to delete Rosetta. Rosetta is part of Snow Leopard and allows the run of PowerPC [code] softwares. PowerPC softwares are made to run with PowerPC chip (G3, G4, G5) but not with Intel chip. If the code of your firefly version is PowerPC only, you cannot run it on OS X Lion.

Now, to "put back to full running order?", you can:

- delete OS X Lion and revert back to Snow Leopard from a backup [Lion is removing more functionalities that it's bringing new]

- replace your Pinacle with a more recent product [look at Logitech, or Airport Express + speakers]

- search for an Intel version of Firefly, it was existing some "svn" (subversion // stability and compatibility are with no guaranty) that might be Intel and PowerPC (Universal)

- if you are not afraid of Terminal and command lines, you can install via MacPorts and run mt-daapd [no GUI = no graphic user interface]

- use virtualization to run under OS X Lion: OS X Snow Leopard, or Windows, or Linux that can run firefly server with a GUI [will slow down your iMac]

- store your music library with an other machine than a computer from Apple [e.g. NAS with mt-daapd/firefly ; can also be a computater with FreeNAS]

- ...

Finally, do not expect any support from a fruit company. Programmers who developed mt-daapd/firefly used reverse-engineering to be compatible with the Apple DAAP protocol [you're out of Apple's €co$y$t€m => no int€r€$t].

To conclude it exists several solutions, but they are not really user-friendly.

Regards.

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Firefly svn-1696 as server and iTunes 10.6 on a Mac as client and the problem still exists.

iTunes waits forever while trying to load music list. It does not stucks with the rotating ball; just hangs indefinitely. The problem is in iTunes because other daap protocol aware application like Banshee and Rhythmbox work flawlessly.
