Itunes 10 and Tiger 10.4.11

Just downloaded iTunes 10 and it says it works with 10.5 upwards only but the website says:

Macintosh Software
Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later; Mac OS X version 10.5 or later is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
QuickTime 7.6 or later
Support for HE-AAC requires QuickTime 7.6.4 and Mac OS X version 10.5 or later
Safari 4.0.3 or later
200MB of available disk space

Anyone else had this problem?

Powerbook 15 G4, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well there is a solution but I doubt people will like it

I run Tiger 10.4.11 on my iMac intel - its about 6 years old now so I will not ever upgrade since it still runs perfect and I don't want that to change.

I never thought I needed iTunes 10 but circumstances have now changed.

I was as surprised as everyone that it doesn't work on tiger.

However I needed it to use with a device so I did the next best thing.

I do have Windows XP running through Parallels Desktop

Decided to try to install it on there. Works fine, my iphone mounts and there you have it.

As absurd as it is - I am running iTunes 10 on my Mac that runs Tiger OSX through Windows XP with parellels.

Funny enough I can set the target for the library for my other iTunes that is in my Mac directory through the file sharing.

Crazy

21st century indeed.

Is it strange that after hours and hours of utter failure just trying to get my computer to be a computer and itunes to act like itunes, that I actually expected some apple "support" on this site? SSSIIIIGHHH....although it is somewhat comforting to see everyone experiencing the same problems I'm having (just give me the ONE upgrade I need to make my ridiculously expensive new phone work!), still more comforting would be a solution from apple that didn't further ravage my bank account.

Actually, I am willing to suffer the slings and arrows of your outrageous solution. 🙂 Question: Which version of Parallels Desktop will work for Tiger on a PPC iMac? And where can I get it? Question 2: Would the same shtick work, if I went with Sun's free solution (Virtual Box) or some other commercial parallel sandbox?

My main motivation is to include my aged PPC iMac in the household iTunes 10.3.1 sharing and future iTunes Match use. The speakers on the iMac are still working, it plays music, so why not. I do have more modern hardware that will run Lion when that becomes available, but still, I hate to leave this old machine decrepit and out of the family circle. 🙂

Replying to myself: I just noticed, that Home Sharing works in iTunes 9.2.4, which is what is running on Tiger, so I can still move music fairly easily between the iTunes libraries. I just won't be able to download from the cloud or use iCloud directly. Sort of like having a off-the-beaten-path village that is not interconnected with highways like other settlements are... And, I realized that PPC iMac will not support any of the Intel-based parallelization sandboxes like Parallels Desktop... Best I can do is Virtual PC for MacOS X, which runs as a slow emulation.

I haven't reviewed this forum in a while, since realizing there is no easy answer to this issue. Buying a new Mac-Mini does not solve as I need my laptop for day-to-day business. Nor does using any window parallel. Besides, as fluent as I am in Windows, I HATE the platform! Oh, and good luck if you need support for Virtual PC. I have been running VPC since before Microsoft bought out the company. If you even manage to get tech support on the phone for the product they will tell you they can't help you because it's installed on a Mac. Ummm...***???

So, I have figured out this workflow if you can call it that.

  1. In my laptop (10.4.11) Back up iCal data (ditto for any contact data, etc).
  2. In my MacPro, access the laptop through my Ethernet connection
  3. In my MacPro iCal, restore the data using the file stored on the laptop
  4. In iTunes 10, synch the MacPro version of the calendar
  5. Then - to make sure iCal entries entered directly in the iPod are synched to laptop iCal, I back up the MacPro iCal version
  6. Take that backup file and dump into the laptop (through the ethernet connection)
  7. In laptop, restore that iCal using the file from the Mac Pro.

Clearly, I must get down on my knees and worship Apple and give many thanks for the ease its product has brought unto my life.

DOH! Because I never thought of that! Going to attempt to play with that now! Thanks Chris. Needing Google docs for two new projects I'm doing with my college, so this makes sense. Do you know if I can post the iCal directly to Google or do I need to post the backup file? Either way, will play with that today.
