None of reasons mentioned are why Netflix, airplay and TV rental aren't coming to the 1gen Apple TV. It has all the hardware specs it needs. It's over-specced in fact.

The problem is the Component Video out.

The Roku box has component outs. So does the original XBox and the Wii. All have Netflix. But people have tried to hack the original Apple TV to run Netflix and have been unable to achieve adequate performance.

You use that word "supporting," but I don't think that it means what you think it means. It certainly does not mean adding new features that the product was never designed for or advertised as providing; it means keeping the product working correctly with current software revisions and continuing to provide content. To the best of my knowledge the original Apple TV still works according to its product specifications.

My iPhone 3gs still works fine, and does everything that I bought it to do, but it doesn't support Apple's Facetime or HDR photography that the iPhone 4 offers. Does that mean that Apple has "quit supporting" my phone?

Yes, but the old Apple TV has LOST functionality and no longer supports Airtunes.

Apple, I've been an avid supporter for years. I was loyal because I was under the impression you supported the stuff you built. I have an Apple TV 30gb one, and I do want netflix( I'm even willing to pay up to 20$ for an upgrade to get it. ( Oh and its bull crap saying it cant support it.. I ran boxie on it for a while and it didn't have any issues ) I guess its time to abandon apple to buy any number of other boxes that will support it. With this and your botched job on the iphone4 reception... it shows your marketing people are in charge and you have abandoned your roots. Also while I'm at it I just switched to an Android phone because its "open" and I have a choice of Carriers , I still can't believe you teamed up with AT&T ..I'm sure you've gotten your fair share of negative feedback on them.. So long... signed a once loyal fan.

My first gen iPhone doesn't support multitasking... Should I go buy a windows phone? No I just upgraded to an iPhone 4. They can't keep updating new features forever. They have to stop at some point... Oh and have I mentioned that the old apple tv cannot run the software on the new one because of procrpessor architecture incompatibilities? (iOS requires and ARM based processor and the old apple TV doesn't have that style). My OS 9 Mac stopped receiving feature updates too...

The old Apple TV does stream. Try looking at the movie trailers on the Apple site. You see them by streaming. I agree with those who say that the 1st Gen Apple TV with Netflix streaming added would be a far superior product than the 2nd Gen version with all of its poor streaming issues because of no storage space. I, for one, would even be willing to pay some amount for a software update that would allow that.

The reason Netflix doesn't work on 1st gen ATV isn't because of Flash. It's because to use Netflix on ATV with Boxee, you would have to install Microsoft Silverlight just like you do on Netflix's website, and the ATV 1st gen doesn't have enough processing power for Silverlight to function properly. Now, the Netflix app on the 2nd gen ATV doesn't need Silverlight installed because it's mainly an app running off of a feed, just like the Roku, and Google TV versions.
