I'm in the same situation here. And have been for a week now. Hope apple can fix this one. I had just bought a movie and was keen to watch it on my tv!
As an Apple stockholder, I can say I'm really fed up with my Apple TV (1st generation) and iTunes 10!!! I just purchased a new Win7 OS computer and downloaded iTunes 10. Not only were there dups and triplicates for just about every song in my library, but I cannot get the ATV to sync with iT10 at all. I've done every suggestion offered in this thread---NADA, NOTHING. I have to laugh at the "Apple Help" which says "Go to EDIT>Preferences, choose Apple TV, and make sure "Look for Apple TVs" is selected....THERE IS NO APPLE TV REFERENCE IN ITUNES 10 "PREFERENCES"---it is NOWHERE to be found!!!!
I have gotten ATV to show up in the left box of iTunes (Devices) but the only choice to sync is "PHOTOS" and that won't even work!!! If I hand select the folders of PHOTOS to sync then click "APPLY" --- once again, NOTHING HAPPENS, ZILCH.
That seems to do it.
I reset my apple tv and out of a sudden, iTunes recognizes again that there was something like synchronization.
My hunch is that the latest versions of iTunes (10.x)and Apple TV (3.x) in combination can not distinguish between Apple TV generation 1 and 2. As ATV gen 2 comes without a hard drive there is no need for synching.
The good thing about the ATV reset: You do not need a bunch of clicks to make your way from all the iTunes store offers to your own music and videos.
What bugs me is that Apple seems to ignore the mess. As there is a lot of information in the web about how to set up Apple TV and iTunes it takes hours to figure out what went wrong.
Breaking the link and recreate it does indeed activate all the tabs in iTunes.
Takes times of course to sync anew what you want on the hard drive of Apple TV gen 1.
This should indeed be properly documented from Apple.
I have a PC and don't know much about Mac's -- funny that ATV is having trouble synching with it's own bretheren ;-)))
I assume Mac's have a firewall...if so, turn it OFF before proceeding with the following:
Reconnect the ATV to the Mac (wirelessly) getting a new 5 digit code from ATV to plug into the Mac when you open iTunes to add "Devices" (the ATV). The firewall interferes with the coupling of the ATV and the PC, but donno if that's true with a Mac.
That's about all I can tell you. Good luck...if all else fails, bring 'em both to an Apple store and let them figure it out.
For what it's worth - I tried everything to sync my Apple tv with iTunes and my Mac but nothing worked until I did the factory install and wiped out what was stored on my Apple tv. Now, for the first time, Apple tv shows up in devices on the left hand panel of iTunes and stays there.
With the new factory install everything appears to be working for me.Fingers crossed.
Hi John,
As a PC user of ATV, I've had similar issues with ATV as you can see from my posts. One quirky thing that continues to bug my ATV is it's refusal to download updates with the original factory version software. I have to take it to the Apple store to get the upgrade and from that point on, it will download further upgrades. I made the mistake of restoring the ATV, which is a reformatting of the HD and much to my chagrin, once again, the original software version would not download updates from the web...so it was BACK TO THE APPLE STORE AGAIN !!!!!!!
No wonder Jobs and Co. have junked this model and come out with a simple version of ATV with basically no features like the old one.
Check with your wireless broadband internet provider because my Apple TV (1st generation) and my MacBook Pro can connect to the internet but can't communicate with each other and my local internet provider has received many complaints since they started using a new router box in people's homes.
I have had this same problem since updating the new version of iTunes. I have shutdown and reset EVERYTHING. Upgraded the firmware on my router. Adjusted several setting on my router. Tried connecting both via Ethernet and Wireless. Only ONCE during all this did my ATV show up under "devices" on the left. By the time I started typing in the access code in my PC, it disappeared, and I haven't seen it since.
Looks like the recent version of iTunes has completely blocked my ATV.
If you use Intego VirusBarrier X6, your connection to Apple TV is likely to be blocked by default, which means Apple TV will not appear under Devices in iTunes. (Historically, Intego software has been very unobtrusive, so this is unusual.) The solution is to update VirusBarrier X6 to the latest version, then click on the Antivandal Tab, then the 'Trusted Addresses' tab. Finally, click on 'Trust Apple TV' checkbox near the bottom of the application window. You may need to restart iTunes.
Unfortunately, at this time, this solution may also fail. In that case, follow these steps to manually "trust" Apple TV:
First, revert VirusBarrier X6 to it's default settings:
-Select 'VirusBarrier X6' in the top-left menu bar of your screen.
-Choose Preferences from the drop down menu
-Click the Advanced icon in the new window that appears.
-Now click 'Revert to Default' and enter your admin user password.
Now, follow these steps to allow access to the Apple TV:
To locate your Apple TV's IP address:
-Go to the Settings menu on Apple TV
-Select General
-Select Network
Now, make note of your Apple TV's IP address.
Now, open your VirusBarrier X6 software:
-Select the AntiVandal icon
-Click on the 'Trusted Addresses' tab
-Click the small '+' sign in the lower left corner of the application window
(you may need to click the small padlock icon to allow changes)
-Enter the IP address from your Apple TV
-Click 'Okay'
Test to see if your able to connect to your Apple TV.
Correcting my previous post, Apple TV may not be blocked by default by Intego VirusBarrier X6. More likely is that VB has blocked ATV because it had previously detected a "flood attack" involving ATV. Either way, the steps provided should solve the problem.
