How to remove ping from itunes (Version10)

Until Apple provide a checkbox, there is only one way to remove Ping from the sidebar in iTunes 10 (so far as I know).

Enter the iTunes preferences, go to Parental, disable the Store. Ping goes (and so does the store).

If you want to access the store in the future then you can by re-enabling it.

Apple, if you are listening, why oh why do you add something to the sidebar without a way of removing it? For people who don't want Ping all you have done is force the stuff they do use (playlists) further down the page.

As UI specialists, you really should know better!!!

as a bonus, not having the store visible means you won't have the temptation to buy stuff you don't need. If enough people disable the store, maybe, just maybe, Apple will give a checkbox to remove ping (just like they do for radio, podcasts, tv etc).

Hope this helps others.

Well put!

I had a more sinister problem. I went to white a review and it asked me for my information so I changed my name to "Hate Ping" I am not sure if it is a coincidence but the next time I tried to buy something from the iTunes store my payment was declined. Changing my name back to the name on my credit card didn't fix this. I seriously doubt this post will get past the Apple editors in tact but that's o.k. I will use 3rd party outlets to protest against this "Big Brother" ping control.

Ha Ha
Great p.s.: I tried to cut and paste this into Apple's Text Edit to use on other forums if this doesn't get through but it wouldn't format the text Ironically, I had to use Microsoft Word.

It is worth noting that I am a die-hard Apple fan. I have used Macs since the early 90's and hate Windows with a passion. I have managed to convert many people to Macs. It is sad to see Apple becoming tyrants now they are finally getting the balance of power that they truly deserve.

Tell Apple here -> http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

Using the Terminal app,
to *Turn off Ping next to songs*
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool FALSE

to *Turn on store arrows next to songs*
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool TRUE

to *Change arrows to point to library instead of store*
defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool Yes

I totally agree with the above post. Everytime I see an ipdate to iTunes I dread what is coming.

I bought my first iMac in 97 and this is perhaps the absolute worst thing I have ever seen from Apple. If there were another music library program to use I'd stay up all day and night and switch immediately. What a scam...

Is there another music player that is a noncommercial alternative to iTunes?

Close. It's under:

iTunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Parental Control -> Disable

Check the "Ping" box to disable Ping. Whe you do that Ping no longer shows up in the sidebar nor when you select a song title. Finally!

I always fidn it funny that people praise Apple for "beautiful design" and "friendly, easy to use " software. I think it's the opposite. I've sepnt more time hunting on the Interent trying to figure out how to use Apple products than for any other software I use. Their usability is horrendous

I just now sent a strongly worded message to iTunes feedback speaking against PING and asking for more user configurability. This post answered my need - question ever so nicely. Thank You! so much. Since the configurability is there, but is not mentioned on the help screens, my revised suggestion to Apple is to expand on the help screen text to say that it can be turned off, where and how etc.

Thanks for a great post.
