iTunes 10 keeps freezing. Please help.

I downloaded iTunes 10 to my computer the other night. Every time I try to start it up, it freezes about 5 to 10 seconds into it.

It doesn't matter what part of iTunes I try to access. If I go to the store, it freezes. If I go to my music, it freezes. It won't even let me click on Ping, it freezes before I can get to it.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, but it does nothing.

I really don't know what is going on. My music and whatever else is on an external hard drive, but I have never had issues until I started to use iTunes 10.

Any help? Thanks.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I believe that I have found a solution to my problem.

I'll give you the logic first:

If iTunes has issues with media being on a drive outside of the computer that iTunes is installed on, then make it believe that the media is local.

To do that, I made a symbolic link of the folder that my music is stored in, and placed that link on my computer's main hard drive, Created a new library and imported the music via the symlink, not directly from the NAS. This time the import went as fast as iTunes 9, including Album Artwork & Gapless Playback processing. iTunes is attentive immediately upon opening also.

I know that my hardware has changed since my last post, and that I am now using a PC instead of a Mac, but the freezing whilst addressing a NAS problem had existed for me on both parties, and it is possible to make symbolic links under Unix/OS X also.

Since installing itunes 10.2.1 I've had continual freezing problems in itunes; it also causes my whole machine to freeze. When this happens I have to force quit using command alt and power switch.

I also get 'the itunes library file cannot be saved. the disk could not be read from or written to.' message when I try to sync my ipod.

This happens on my iMac and MBP both Mac OS X 10.6.7.

It seems there are alot of people out there with similar problems....

SO APPLE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS? HOW LONG BEFORE YOU HAVE A FIX? COME ON YOUR LETTING YOUR SUPPORTERS DOWN!!

I have a new HP and was given an iPad 2 as a present. Love the thing but completely freezes up my computer during some random step in the sync process. It's the same on wired or WiFi sync and all my info is on the hard drive not an external or network. I have to power the machine off and hope I pulled in the songs or photos I wanted but I never get it all. I'm not a complete fool and I've adjusted settings in accordance with many recommendations. Why does my HP hate my iPad?

Don't no if this will help you. My latest itunes kept on freezing too. Tried various methods to solve this. Try this:

1) load up itunes (don't sign in though)

2) connect your external drive (if your using one)

3) connect your ipod

4) burn a disc off if thats what your doing

5) Then sign into your account

Haven't had any locking up problems since.

Don't know if this will work for anyone else, but found a (sort of) fix to this issue. Originally I thought it was an issue with itunes itself or my last.fm plug-in but exhausted these options and still no resolution.

Opened itunes in safe mode (hold shift+control when opening), then went to the itunes store and signed out. Closed itunes while on the itunes store screen and when re-opening in normal mode cancelled the sign-in and it didn't freeze. Subsequently now even when I open itunes signed in it won't freeze the majority of the time, but when it does just repeat this process and it works again.

Hope this helps.

I think Terranaut has the answer, at least to my problem.

I also run iTunes againse a networked drive mounted locally on my Windoze PC and which continually freezes when doing any kind of disk i/o.

A simple symlink (shortcut) pointing to the network drives iTunes directory and labeled the same under your local Music folder works a treat. eg:

shutdown iTunes

C:\Users\fred\My Music\iTunes -> M:\iTunes

restart iTunes holding shift key to chose the local symlink file.

Hey-presto-bingo everthing comes to life like magic!! 😀

Huge Kudos to Terranaut - this has been driving me crazy for ages.

@Apple - sort it out!!!! This demonstrably has to be to do with subroutine checking for network drives.

Grrrr
