Itunes 10 installation problem with ipodservice.exe
I have an issue with the installation of itunes 10: I get an error saying that Ipodservice.exe couldn't start (Windows application error). Itunes starts ok but then I can synch my photos (itunes 10 freezes). I tried de-installing all my apple products, restarting windows and then reinstalling itunes 10: still have the same error message and the same issue. Does someone have an idea on how to make this work ? It was working perfectly when I was under itunes 9...
This is disgraceful. If the upgrade won't work on a person's machine then it shouldnt be offered. Full stop.
Stop wasting my life - the hoops I have to jump through for apple. Makes me want to be a pirate. Why must it be so unbelievably awkward to be a paying customer?
Apples "upgrade" of the ipodservice.exe is way buggy and has memory conflicts with something running on many, many PCs.
Reverting to the older version of this that came with iTunes 9 seems to work.
Follow the directions the very nice people have posted (Thanks All!).
1. Uninstall iTunes 10 (run the installer and click remove, this will not affect your music etc)
2. Download 9.2 from one of the file shares posted to this forum
3. Install iTunes 9.2.1
4. After the install, copy the "C:\Program Files\iPod" folder to an alternate location. The only thing in here is the ipodservice.exe files, so no worries that it will affect other parts of iTunes10
5. Uninstall iTunes 9.2.1 (run the installer program again and click remove)
5. Install iTunes 10
6. When the error pops up during installation, overwrite C:\Program Files\iPod with the previously copied folder.
7. The install will complete successfully and iTunes 10 will run normally.
Worked with my WindowsXP box
Good Luck (Apple, please patch this!)
Note to self: repeat after me, "I will not automatically upgrade my Apple software. I will not automatically upgrade my Apple software. I will not automatically upgrade my Apple software."
Thanks for the post! An internet search engine brought me here. This worked for me perfectly. I suspect this will be a wide spread bug and we will probably see another update shortly. Thanks again!
I know that when I installed iTunes 10 it did the same thing where it said there was an error, but I seem to be having other issues with it. I can plug my ipod in and my computer recognizes that the ipod is plugged in, but itunes will not recognize it. Therefore I can't sync it or update it or anything. Does anyone is this is an issue caused by the error with the installation or something else? Advice and help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hello All,
I tried the steps in the bulletin with NO LUCK. I tried Just about everything I red about regarding this problem, before rolling back to 9.2.1.4. The Roll Back was the only thing that worked in my case. I think Apple has a serious defect with the ITUNES 10 installation package. I should note though, that I tried on 2 lap tops and believe it or not the older labtop worked. I upgraded from 9.0 to 10.0068 on the old lap top successfully. But on the newer lap top I upgraded from both 9.1 and 9.2 to 10.0068 unsuccessfully. So currently I will stick with 9.2.1.4 on the newer lap top.
Does anybody know where I can report a defect to the Apple development team?
FYI: the bug cropped up during an iPhone4 upgrade to iOS 4.1. The iPhone was temporarily bricked and required restoration, which iTunes 10 did once it was completely installed.
Thanks for the tip. Please forgive me if I am suspecting too much but can anyone tell me how I can check the integrity of this binary file? Sorry I just had some bad experience before...
PROBLEM SOLVED. It looks like version 10.0.1, released a few days ago, includes this fix. Ran the install using this new version, everything worked as expected. Note to self, wait for the ".0.1" version the next time there is a major upgrade!
I've just got the same problem after trying to upgrade to the newest version of ITunes (10.1)
Unforunately - following the steps from user IpodBrick didn't work as they have for other posters. Trying to run the ITunes 9.2 setup which has been made available as a download at the start of th thread doesn't work as I am usiing a 64-bit version of Vista and so ge the old "This Itunes installer is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows..." error when trying to install.
Anybody has this problem and know a way around it?
