How do I scan multiple pages of a document into a single PDF?

The new Snow Leopard system that without separate printer drivers seems to have eliminated an option I used all the time, which was to scan the multiple pages of a document into a single PDF. Is there some to do this?

You're not going to like this, but I've found that the simplest, quickest, and easiest way to scan in multiple pages into a PDF is to use Adobe Acrobat Pro. There is a 'scan to PDF' option under the Documents menu in that App, and so long as there is a usable scanner driver on the Mac Acrobat will scan in as many pages as you want into PDF. It will even OCR them as well if you want.

The problem is that you must have Acrobat Pro. I don't know if any of the other PDF generation apps available for Macs will do this. Some of the non-Acrobat (that is, cheap) PDF generators on Windows do.

I use Acrobat Pro for all my PDF scanning, but then I had Acrobat Pro for other reasons. It might be overkill to get it for just one project.

OK, I uninstalled to HP printer software, and made sure that I have the up-to-date Apple Snow Leopard software for my HP. But I have still NOT recovered the ability to scan. None of the Apple software recognizes that a scanner is connected. Remember that before installing the HP software I could scan with only one problem, that I could not scan multiple pages into a single PDF. But now I cannot scan at all. How can I get back to the original not-entirely-satifisfactory-buy-way-way-better situation? I am now stuck with zero scanning ability. 😟

That is not a response that is going to get you scanning again. If you had a driver that worked before, you know it exists, and it just becomes a question of finding it.

HP's website is not very clear when it comes to finding software for their myriad products, but a lot of them have been updated for Snow Leopard now. Perhaps someone can help you if you provide the model printer you are using.

I guess miracles happen. After I posted my last message, Apple software update downloaded a new driver that restored my ability to scan, albeit, with the original problem intact! I guess I learned not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Better one scanner in the hand that can't scan multiple pages into a single PDF, than a non-existant scanner that can!
