Hi everyone,
I've purchased the new iPod touch 4g for Christmas and also run into the problem with my TomTom car kit I've used before with my old IPod touch (original 1st gen model).
I've initially contacted TomTom customer support but their answer to my question wasn't really much help (for those interested I'm attaching it below).
I have to say I find it strange that Apple's web page
http://www.apple.com/ipod/accessories/
still shows TomTom Car Kit for iPod touch even it by now both TomTom and Apple should know that there is a problem with the new iPod model ⚠
I kept looking and found this discussion thread.
The information I've found here convinced me that the problem is not some kind of of software or firmware incompatibility but simple case of bad electrical contact between TomTom car kit and iPad connector caused by the slightly reduced thickness and hight o the new iPod model.
I went with solution suggested jdri30 in his earlier post and bought a clear "BELKIN Shield Micra for iPod touch (4th generation)" at BestBuy store. It was much more expensive than the Dotwave case jdri30 described but I didn't want to wait for shipping. For those that don't like clear they have also other colours.
The case works great - it snaps around both sides, top, and back of the new iPod leaving the screen and bottom connector exposed and its thickness makes for the reduced dimensions of the 4-th generation model.
It makes a tight fit in the TomTom car kit cradle - in fact the case could be slightly thinner.
As it is, clicking the iPod-in-the-case in the car kit is easy but removing it requires more effort than with the old iPad. On the other hand, that makes it less likely to lose contact on a bumpy road.
(Thanks jdri30 !)
One thing I've noticed with my TomTom car kit and the new iPod is that unlike what most of you describe I have better results of getting the TomTom Car Kit Tool applet status "Docked" and establishing GPS lock if I snap the iPod in place with the car kit power hooked in but the iPod initially powered off and then power it on.
If I have the car kit tool applet running and then snap the iPod in place the status remains "Not Docked" until I either close and relaunch the applet or power the iPod off and on.

Subject: TomTom car kit compatibility with new iPod touch
Customer (…) 12/27/2010 04:44 AM
I have a TomTom car kit for iPod touch
TomTom model 4UUB3 (4UUB3.001.03)
serial number (…)
which I used with my old iPod touch 8GB model MA623C
OS ver 3.1.3 (7E18)
I've recently purchased new iPod touch 64Gb model MC547C (4th Generation?)
OS ver 4.2.1 (8C148)
I have TomTom car kit tool ver 1.0 and TomTom U.S. & Canada ver 1.6 apps installed on both iPod devices.
The car kit works fine with old iPod but when connected to the new model it doesn't charge the iPod and the TomTom Car Kit Tool applet status shows "Not Docked".
When disconnecting and connecting again the kit to an already running iPod I occasionally get a message the accessory not being supported.
Is the TomTom car kit for iPod touch not compatible with new iPod touch models ?
Is there any fix or other solution ?
