iPod Touch 4G and Tomtom car kit for iPod Touch

Wondering if anyone out there has tried the 4th generation iPod Touch with the existing Tomtom car kit for iPod Touch. Does the GPS, AUX audio, and charging still work with the new gen?

Thanks for any feedback.

I have both the Magellan gps holder and the Tom Tom. The Magellan works fine but the Tom Tom does not with my new 4g ipod touch. It looks like it should but it takes alot of moving around just to get the sound but I have never gotten it to charge or the GPS to work. I was quite disappointed. I now need to sell it. Anyway, thought I would chime in.

Peter,

Thanks a lot for your advice. I really need some. I asked a friend who has a 3G Ipod touch to try and he reported it worked just fine. I tried to follow your recommendation but still didn´t work. I will seach for this "batery inspector" apps to help me up. I´m afraid to break something by pushing the Ipod too much down againt the base.

Hi; I just upgraded from the Ipod Touch 1st Gen to the 4th Gen and had the same issues many of you are having with the TomTom Car Kit. I could get the Ipod to charge but it would not pick-up the GPS signal.

On the docking port of the kit, it appears that the black button directly behind the pin connector is the toggle switch that activates the GPS antenna. It needs to be fully pressed for the GPS to work. Now, since the 4G is thinner that its' predecessor it does not press this button sufficiently enough to activate the GPS antenna.

Insert something directly behind this button so that it is fully pressed when the Ipod 4g is inserted and you should be able to get the GPS activated.(small piece of cardboard worked for me).

Good Luck

Here is what the guys from Tomtom replied to my answer today:

Q:I want to know if the Ipod 4g works with the tomtom kit for ipod, as I saw in many apple discussion forums people saying that because the new ipod is thinner, it wont activate the GPS signal. I am planning to buy one, so that's why the question.

A:The compatability list does not yet include the iPod Touch 4g
This probably being worked on at the moment and a solution will probably be available in the near future. Just like there was for the iPhone 4g

I just upgraded to ipod touch 4g from 3g and have been able to use it with my TomTom ipod car kit (purchased at end of August this year). I typically use the kit in the vertical position instead of the horizontal. I just make sure I push the top of the ipod firmly downward into the contact and I have had no issues. I did try rotating it and because the new ipod is a bit shorter than previous it does want to tilt at an angle and I could see it loosing it's connection if one went over a big bump on the road.

I did try the reveal ipod case as noted in a previous post and found I had to really push and struggle to get it to sit into the car kit. I returned the case. I think you could use a thinner material case that does not have the round edge on the front and it would work better, but since I'm having no issues at this point I will wait for other models of cases to come out. I would recommend to others who have just bought the tomtom kit to ensure that they have it plugged into the car auxillary power, as I didn't do this when I first bought the kit and thought it was busted. You must always have it plugged in for it to work.

Update:

After reading some of the later posts I decided to try mine again.

1. I downloaded the recently updated TomTom App.
2. removed my case.
3. Made sure that Location Services was on
4. Docked my iPod touch. At first I had a bit of trouble but ended up getting it docked well.
5. opened the TomTom car kit App. It recognized the GPS dock!
6. Opened the TomTom GPS App. It worked great for me this time around!

The audio out and charger worked too!

I am pumped that it all worked. The only main differences for me since the last time that it didnt work was that I updated TomTom app. I only tried it once so far so I am not sure that it is fully fixed. I could be that I simply docked it perfect this time compared to the other two times I had tried it.

I hope others will have luck as well because this is truly a great product.

Hi all,

Can I ask -- and I DEFINITELY don't mean this in a snarky way -- why would you buy a somewhat clumsy kit for a GPS system to place your iPod into, when you can just buy a whole TomTom or Garmin GPS system for just about the same price?

Honestly, I'm not being nasty. I just bought the 4G iPod Touch -- and I love it -- and I need a GPS system, and I was just thinking of getting a stand-alone. Are there advantages to getting the TomTom kit for the Touch??

Thanks!

I think ive come up with a "ghetto" set-up for my ipod 4g. I was just thinking of something and i decided to test it and it works. On the car kit there is a black box thingy right above the port for the ipod. It seems that the ipod becomes charged when that is all the way pushed in, but with the new ipod, it doesnt get pushed all the way down due to the thinness. So what i did was just plug the ipod in and not push it into the cradle. Then i took a quarter and stuck it right in between the black box and ipod. Then keep the quarter there and push the ipod into the cradle. You will now see that the ipod is being charged, but it will take it a little bit for it to connect to the gps(at least it took a while for me), but that might be because there are a ton of trees in the way of reception. Hope this helps.

I like the iPod touch as a solution for the following reasons:

1. It is an all in one solution (less the phone).
2. I wanted an ipod charger that could also play music through an AUX cable. The Tomtom kit gave me this and for only a bit more than other inferior setups the Tomtom had GPS.
3. It allows for the GPS App to mute the music while giving directions. A stand alone GPS will often use its own built in speaker. The iPod through an AUX cable will play through the cars speakers. I am guessing that most GPS units are using their own tiny speaker and wouldn't mute my ipod music to give directions.

One of the features I love about the Tomtom car kit is that the AUX cable can attach to the Tomtom car kit. The signal comes through the dock. Two things that are great about this. First is that you dont have to keep plugging in the cable to the headphone jack. Second, since it is getting the signal through the dock the headphone volume level is not changed. So many times before I had cranked my headphone level up to play in the car and forgot to lower it after switching to headphones. The Tomtom dock wont require you to adjust the headphone volume.

I hope this helps.

It Works!!
Hello everyone. Sorry for my bad English. I'm doing with the google translator. I have been following the discussion and I did the test suggested here. Indeed we must have the latest version of the program. Location services was on.
Just put the case "Macally FlexFit" and strike back the screen cleaning wipe that comes with this case to tighten the black button (this screen cleaning wipe is flexible sticks and take off again without problems).
The only thing I have not gotten it to work is the sound of the device itself.
I will find out what could have happened because I marked "enable sound."
Perhaps the receiver problem, because I bought the tomtom website and the box was open I have brought, so maybe it was a refund for this reason.

Saludos.

I just purchased the car kit for my iPod Touch 4g, and while it does not connect when it's just in the car kit, I found that a small stack of post-it notes (about 2mm thick) cut to the width of the car kit makes it work if you just stick it at the very bottom of the kit, right under the connector.

I get sound, charging, and gps from the kit

What seems at first look to be a problem is actually a fix I've been waiting for. I never liked taking the case off the Touch to use it in the car kit...and now I don't have to. I purchased many cases for the Touch 4G and finally found one that fits the car kit perfectly and is just thick enough to engage the power and GPS connections and the 4G Touch charges nicely in the car kit with the case on. I can leave the 4G Touch in it and slide it into the car kit just as easy as the 2G Touch without a case. Again, it's a perfectly snug fit and will not fall out or jump around. Coupled with PCLL's process steps for making the 4G Touch work with the car kit...there is finally a perfect solution. The case that worked is the "Clear Dotwave TPU CASE Cover for iPOD Touch 4th Gen 4 G" available on eBay from many different vendors. I paid $2.89 with free shipping and received it in just a couple days after buying it. It is just a little thinner than all the rest, but still has enough padding to still protect the Touch. Just so you know, I have no connection with whoever manufacturers it. I now can use it in the car kit as well as my PED3 stand and never have to take the case off. The perfect solution I was trying to find for for quite some time. Good luck to everyone and I hope this helps those looking for this type of solution.
