iOS devices include... iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch...

OS X device.. include any Macintosh computer running the OS X or AppleTV gen 1 which also runs OS X..

Mac to Mac is OS X to OS X.. Mac to appleTV gen 1 is OS X to OS X..

iOS to *OS X* has never been enabled.. NEVER! this would be an entirely new feature.. i.e. iOS to OS X streaming..

Airfoil and a couple of other third party softwares allow audio streaming mac to mac, mac to airport express and mac to iOS device.

The recieving end needs to have the airfoil speakers application open so unless a plugin is made that remains unsupported on AppleTV.

iTunes itself allows streaming both video and audio mac to mac through home sharing.. you don't need 3rd party software to do that..

don't think the appleTV gen 1 supports home sharing.. maybe that's the problem.. they have moved on to home sharing as the handshake for devices in the case of protected content (appleTV gen 1 uses the PIN etc, etc) and aren't about to implement home sharing on appleTV gen. 1

Plex and other 3rd party software can be used to stream unprotected audio and video from Mac to iOS device..

Thanks for the kind words. Ego with a touch of shortsightedness thrown in, perhaps. Unrealistic expectations aside, it's amazing how passionate some people can get over their demands for more and better ways to throw their money at the entertainment industry.

This week, however, has seen three developers release Airplay based software titles which will allow iOS to stream audio/video to a Mac, PC or old Apple TV as well as one which allows streaming from Mac to iOS device. These developers did not have huge budgets, yes, it it flaky and will likely have their work blocked in future updates or removed from the app store, but it has been achieved since this thread started.

While it probably doesn't make economic sense for Apple to invest in development (and what is probably more expensive, support) of enhancements to a discontinued product, the same does not apply to independent developers. Except that anything involving AirPlay that does not come from the iTunes app store or the software update channel would require a third-party hack to install, and Apple has been highly resistant to those, particularly if they involve an iOS hack.

Well I bought AppleTV1 within the year as well... my second one. I gifted a friend with the older unit... and with excited glee I told him that he would soon be able to stream data from his iPad to AppleTV1.

Rather embarrassing don't you think? But that's what Apple wrote in their iOS preview.

Yes, the "news" Apple wrote about the upcoming newest version iOS stated that it would allow video streaming from iOS devices to AppleTV (no mention of AppleTV1 not being able to do this) and it also highlighted that it would allow a iOS device to stream to a net printer (it didn't mention you had to have a new HP). Yep, I have a Epson Artisan WIFI.

So I have one comment about this situation: Purposefully deceptive lies Apple!

Someone said it would be uneconomical for Apple to "allow" AppleTV1 owners have what was promised. I say it is first unethical and secondly very uneconomical that they didn't fix this. After reading through 15 pages of comments I have seen that these Apple customers will no longer buy Apple products for anything video. Count me in.

This is what I have to day about this; I just paid a good sum of many for this Apple TV (GEN 1) the price should have been really discounted if after 4 months the item would be shoveled 6 feet deap! I don't care about the updates! I just want my moneys worth! Why sell a item for full price when you know its not going to be supported. Hey go buy a car and then have then say is not supported for warranty anymore. "because its old tech" then sell it for old tech! Old tech cost somewhere around half price range! This is what I am upset about! They are wrong for this and again KNOWING this was going to happen!

The original ATV was released 4 years ago, not 4 months ago. If you purchased yours 4 months ago, it is still under warranty. I don't know where you got the idea that it won't be covered by warranty. Does the ATV do less than it did when you decided to purchase it? If no, what on earth are you complaining about? Apple never promised endless updates to the hardware. To assume that they would do so is just silly.

No offense.. but Apple started giving previews of what the new iOS would do far more than 4 months before the AppleTV2 was released. The point is that the preview stated that the new iOS update would allow one to stream from an iOS device to Apple TV.

They didn't state the new Apple TV only and they didn't state it wouldn't work on the old Apple TV. It was false advertising. Blatant leaving out the facts.

As an Apple Developer, I was at Corporate and they had the AppleTV's stacked on the shelf a day before the release of the new AppleTV. Luckily like most Apple people I had previously bought a reburb'd one b4 (I only bought t-shirts at the corporate store)

But I too was fooled... 16 pages of others. Reiterating: many people bought the old AppleTVs (the only ones for sale at the time) based on the preview Apple wrote about the new iOS features... including me.

The times I hear of people complaining about the ones who are moaning / complaining about no updates and that the ATV1 is over so many years old.

The fact of the matter is like so many people have pointed out Apple advertised updates for the Apple TV, but NEVER stated it was for the ATV1 or ATV2 (new version box) and users were looking forward to the latest update that would be coming out. But as so many times Apple disappoint users.

How many times has the iPhone the very first one been updated and still continues to receive updates. One the the media players (ACRyan PlayOnHD) I have as well as the ATV1 has been receiving loads of updates and they've actually stated that their unit will continue to receive them as long as its in demand, even though they keep releasing newer and better units.

Think this is why I'll be getting shot of my AppleTV.

I've never seen any such advertisement. Can you provide any actual example of an official Apple advertisement prior to the announcement of ATV2 that made any such claim?

The info about the new features for the new iOS, however, followed Steve Jobs media seminar about those features. Of course it is no longer posted. So I can only ask others that read what I read and have them chime in. Specifically:

With AppleTV1 being the only model for sale at the time... Steve Jobs and the website advertised the attributes of the new OS before it was released.... and specifically stated that the next iOS version would allow video streaming to Apple TV.
