I could not agree more, especially about the fact that retaining an existing customer being cheaper than gaining new ones. This ATV1 is truly a weird topic to me. I suspect that even though it is obsolete in the sense that they do not sell this product any longer, Apple would still continue to support it through their online services such as movie rentals and youtube. I still download new movies and access mobile me services through the device, and I'm sure the services through ATV1 will be upgraded in some fashion in the future. My point being that if they wanted to, they could provide something like ping through the old ATV1 and probably will, yet streaming is off the table. It wouldn't surprise me if the ATV1 gets some enhancements in the near future, although it seems they would be selective. Personally, I think there is some justification to allow this particular enhancement (streaming) to be funded and passed along to us old ATV1 users, But...

I notice that after the new ATV is out, my SUPERB ATV1 won't play TV or Movies without my computer on and iTunes going.

I don't have that problem with my ATV1. Files that are synced play as expected when the iTunes library they are synced with is offline. Make sure that the files you think are synced are actually synced.

Okay lets say this I have a 2002 Powerbook G4 662 its running Leopard no problems and iWork 09, so how I do this well i installed all the software on the Hard drive on a newer version G4 powerbook, then installed that hard drive in the Older mac its complete rubbish you need the newer mac to run newer stuff, I admit in some cases the computer may run slower Slightly!!

The fact that a hacked application can stream to ATV proves this is a deliberate move from Apple to sell more ATV2's !!

Our household owns a Macbook Pro, a white Macbook, ATV1, ATV2, iPad 1, Airport Express, iMac, iPhones3Gs, iPhone4 and an iPod Touch 4G.

We used to stream music through our ATV1 from our different devices only to find out we no longer can stream to ATV1 from iPhones, iPad or iPod Touch.

Apple has crossed a line with this "policy" and we will now watch with excitement what can be achieved with new Android based devices.

The problem is that the new model is not a monotonous update of the previous model. As a starter it lacks a disk; consequently in a day like today when I left my Mac at business I could not use it in any way. Yet the worst lack is the component input; I own one of the last beautiful Sony Plasma display and they lack HDMI! And there is no easy way to convert the two protocol. So, to employ AirPlay I would have not only to replace a perfectly working one year old AppleTv but even trash a 42'' Plasma display!

Thereafter, given I would like to implement AirPlay in an app of mine and test it, lwhat is the cheapest way to inject AirPlay into an amplifier, be it done thru the AppleTv or not?
