BT 205 modem - XXX Did Not Respond

Hi

After months of this problem - it still persists. I have no problems with iChatAV except with video chat. In general my attempts to connect with others for video chat have been met with intermittent success - sometimes getting the user did not respond message. When trying to connect with another user with the same router (Voyager 205) I always get the user did not respond message. My friend has a voyager 205 and an imac G5. We both have 2mb broadband. We have both tried port forwarding as per advice on websites - all to no avail. Is there something that I am missing? Are Apple aware of this issue? Might it be the router's fault? Perhaps I should be using a modem instead of a router (when I had a broadband modem with the same setup everything worked fine - but I have changed ISP and the only use routers).

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Where did you find out that a D-Link modem would work?
I bought a DI-524 and tried it. It worked for me right out of the box.

I am in the USA. I do NOT know whether my DI-524 would be compatible with your BT service.

Is there a list of compatible devices to use with ichat somewhere?
Yes. iChat AV: Compatible Network Routers There are others that require no additional configuration. The list has not been updated for a while. MANY other currently produced routers that offer the "UP-n-P" feature will work with no additional configuration other than enabling UP-n-P.

Ralph Johns is not "from" BT, but he has helped MANY Voyager 205 configure their ports for use with BT internet service. See Ralph's http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page3.html about "Setting Up Your Router" and the following page on "Eliminating Problem areas" for all the info you need about WHAT port configuration settings you need. Your router manual should tell you HOW to check or change your 205's configuration settings.

(If you are one of the users who must configure your Mac OS X Firewall ports to enable video chat, (not everyone does,) these same ports apply there, too.)

You can also search iChat Discussions for "Voyager 205" (without the quote marks) and find many threads on the subject. Ralph has answered many of them with specifics.

If the above does get you sorted, and if BT do not post to you directly here, contact your ISP (internet service provider) to explore possible hardware alternatives. I would suggest any UP-n-P enabled router that is compatible with your ISP's service.

You mean this one ?
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1023160#1023160

The information has been here for a long time
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/BT/Voyager205/iChat.htm
although it does seem to work as well for the newest Firmware update for the 205 AND as you point out maybe 10.4.3

Solution:

Get a new modem.

Hi Simon - Peter,

I would also ask which ports you are forwarding and which Protocols

This site's Page sets then up for ANY protocol.

If you used the info in Apple Doc 93208 it is wrong

1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, 5223 and 16384-16403, which need to be open for TCP only.

Most ports should be UDP with just the Jabber ones (5220, 5222, 5223) on TCP only and one each from the AIM (5190) and Bonjour (5298) being TCP as well as UDP.

Ralph has been extremely helpful to a lot of guys/gals in this forum trouble-shooting iChat. I sure hope Apple appreciates this!

I hope Apple will solve iChat problems with the next update (10.4.4). I have personally given up on it after wasting so much time trying to resolve the same kind of problems (I am using a compatible Linksys & the other party, an Apple Extreme router). Setting ports etc were at best, spotty in connecting. Sometimes, we succeeded, most times, failed (the usual 'xxx did not respond', 'insufficient bandwidth' etc). I have gone back to Skype, which performs flawlessly.

It rather surprises me that an Apple program could be so hard to get up and running. I have used Macs for the last 5 years (after switching over from Windows) and this is the first program that really wore me out trying to get it to work well!! People like Ralph helped a lot but I think it is unfair that they have to spend so much time trying to help others when it is Apple who should fix these problems once and for all.

I am keeping my fingers crossed while waiting but still come to this forum every now and then to see how others are suffering...

i agree. i spent quite a while configuring my ichat, when I couldn't connect.

after messing around for a couple of days, the test sites worked and that's it.

i work in film production, in california. everyone i know, uses ichat to communicate during jobs. not one of these people can connect to my "now working" ichat.

i have even had some of my friends call me to ask if i can help them get their ichat working. they think it's something they have done.

my isight is sitting in a box on my desk. it's a real shame.

I agree - Ralph has been extremely helpful. I am well educated in the ways of routers etc. having followed his expert advice. I can't imagine how he has the time to be so active in these discussions!

I too am waiting for an Apple solution to this problem. I have been using macs since 1988 and this is the first problem that has ground me into submission too - a pity because I love ichat; I think it is amazing and had used it since its creation until this problem.

I am a long time experienced Mac User and Apple Evangelist. However this is my first post here - I also have professional technical expertise in the area of computer comms including routers etc.

This XXX did not respond problem is an iChat bug - which needs fixing - it makes iChat unusable for so many people. I appreciate the efforts of those who make copius efforts to educate people about setting up port forwarding amongst other things but this is iChat problem is not a LAN config problem...

I have Macs on two different networks - those using the previous iChat under OS 10.3.9 work fine without the "not responding" problem to all. On both network types, the Macs using iChat under Tiger suffer from the problem when trying to connect to the same people.

I had hoped 10.4.3 would addresss this - let us hope that 10.4.4 does - would be a nice Christmas present.

thanks, defcom 1.

i already got my chat working with you. You, as a matter of fact were are the only person, who i can connect to.

After getting my computer working with you, I tried to connect to my regular contacts and got nothing.

We need to set up a Global configuration "party" that way everyone in the world can trouble shoot this software or........

Maybe apple can just fix it??
