Random vibrating

Since the iOS 4.0 upgrade, my phone periodically vibrates for no apparent reason. The battery is charged, I don't have any unchecked texts or emails, and there are no notifications. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4

I have the same problem and I think that it is not a software problem but that is a hardware problem. If you have the same problem. It might be the vibrate switch is loose. If you slightly move the button in both directions it is the hardware.
3 ways to solve this problem

1. Try to get a case for it and put it on but make sure that the button doesn't go too far back.

2. Try bringing it into Apple Care and see if they can adjust the button. They will most likly just give you a new one.

3. If you dont have a warranty, you will have to buy a new one, Live with it, Or get a different phone.

I came across this thread in searching for a fix to the issue I've been having with my phone - which is exactly what you said in your post.

I have an APPT with the Genius Bar tomorrow, but as my phone is JUST over a year old, I'm wondering if they will take care of it for me or not....

I will let you know! Not ready to upgrade to the 4 yet but if push comes to shove I guess I have to.... I would rather wait for the 5 to come out 🙂

I just my Iphone 4s less than 2 weeks ago. I just copied everything from my old iphone 4 (which has a faulty home button), but i noticed that the battery life was very short. I reset all settings and after doing so i noticed rendom vibrations. Should i have this replaced. This will be my 3rd defective iphone that is still within warranty. Am I just that unlucky. and I got all of them from the carrier.

I have an IPhone 4S running version 5.0.1. It is my second 4S since I replaced the last one due to these random vibrations. Notification center has all notifications turned off. It happens on my desk so the ringer switch is not the issue. If the ringer switch is turned on I get an audible alert, but nothing on the screen (still asleep and nothing when I log in). I have restored the phone from backup. The problem still persists. It's obviously not a hardware issue since changing the hardware resulted in continuation of the same random vibrations. Any suggestions? I'm not real keen about getting a 3rd phone since the first replacement didn't help. I'd like my text message alerts and meeting alerts but I can't trust either with all the false alarms!

Okay. Deleted Gmail app and all other programs with red alerts next to the program icon. The only one left was the built-in mail app. The settings were Notification center: off. Alert style: banner. Badge App Icon: on. Show Preview: on. View in lockscreen: on.

Using these settings I sent myself two emails. It vibrated both times so the problem is not specific to exchange server (work email) or gmail (home email).

My attempt at a fix was to turn the remaining settings (listed above) off. Everything under the mail app in the notification center was turned off. New test emails and ... it vibrated for both the home and work accounts.

Apple, I'd say you have a bug to fix!!!

PS. My fix was to force the phone NOT to push emails. That way I could set my alerts for texts and meeting reminders and they would be the only vibrations. Of course, I no longer get my emails in real time but need to manually fetch them. When I fetch and have new mail, I still get a vibration alert even with all mail notification settings off. It's far from ideal, but the best compromise I can think of

I had the vibrate switch dirty contact problem on my 3G a couple of times. It was pretty easy to diagnose, poking at the switch without actually toggling it could easily make the phone swap in and out of silent, and you could see the speaker icon on the screen when it did so if the screen was on. The genius bar replaced my phone each time and it fixed it.

I'm now having recker101's problem with my 4S -- it's not the same issue, and it's driving me crazy. I took it into the genius bar about a month ago. They said it was a known issue with a faulty vibration motor and replaced my phone, but the problem persists on the new phone. It does appear to be linked to emails coming in, but only on my Exchange account. roleau0's experiment (below) is pretty enlightening. I've similarly tried turning virtually all notifications off and it still keeps happening.

This might not solve your problem, but I had similar symptoms and was fruitlessly searching for things such as "ios5 new mail alert vibrates."

I upgraded a 3GS to IOS 5.0.1 and suddently had random phone vibrations. I usually keep my phone on vibrate. My problem was solved counter-intuitively by going to Settings\Sounds\New Mail and removing the assigned alert sound.

Looks like by default, IOS5 sets a sound alert for new mail. This automatically became a "vibrate" when my phone is on vibrate.
