macbook pro core i7 high res anti-glare screen garbled graphics

My two month old macbook pro consistently (once every day or two) produces a garbled up screen after using it for a few hours. The only way to resolve this is to restart the computer. I've talked with apple support and have gone into the store for help and so far everyone is clueless and offer no real advice. I can't take a screenshot on the machine once this occurs, the picture just comes up blank, but I did take pictures with my cellphone.

Has anyone else had a similar issue and is this most likely a graphics hardware error?

This is a really good summary!
I think each is a "temp" solution, with the last being a possible fix once beta is out of beta (and issues still are not present). Downgrading is a security risk, but this depends on how you feel about the security risks of flash. Lastly, Apple felt the security was enough to include the latest flash player in the 10.6.5 update..

This is the current solution so you won't need to sacrifice battery life:

1. Download flash uninstaller and uninstall it

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,

2. Install the previous reliable flash version 10.0.45.2

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html (157 MB folder)

With this you can turn on "Automatic Graphic Switching" so you can save battery life and your graphics won't be garbled anymore.{quote}
Unfortunately incorrect, IMHO. Some of us have experienced this problem totally without Flash - changing Flash versions may reduce it, but you are not going to convince me (or most others) that a machine that has not had Flash loaded into memory since power up and nonetheless exhibits this behavior playing a DVD in DVD Player is being corrupted by a non-running Flash somehow... the only workaround is to switch off integrated graphics IMHO.

The Flash+Safari hypothesis has been repeatedly reproduced by members of this thread. Either discontinuing use of Safari, switching graphics, or removing/downgrading Flash.

You seem to be the only user in the thread unable to reproduce so perhaps it is a different problem. I suggest you try logging a hardware fault with Apple Care as your issue is consistent and does not appear software/driver related.

I found the solution....I am not using Safari, no more scrambled images. I switched to Firefox, no more issues. The scrambling problem was driving me nuts. I tried uninstalling flash, and reinstalling it, did not work. I just decided to not use Safari...have not had any more scrambling issues since then.
It must then be a software problem.

Well it is not just safari... I make extensive use of VMWare fusion and one of the reasons I upgraded form a 17" core 2 duo to the 15" i7 was the ability to have 8gb of RAM which allows me to have a Windows 7 VM and a Windows XP VM running. I work as a programmer and this environment works wonderfully. Well the VMWare windows have as well shown the messed up display.

I am also using spaces. I have 6 spaces and I regularly go between them. It is true this seems to happen most often on the intel graphics.

I have also seen it in safari and I've done the flash steps mentioned here. Since I have not seen it in safari but I continue to see it in VMWare when I switch spaces.

The fact that folks show the symptom using Flash + Safari in no way demonstrates that this is the cause or the only circumstance in which it arises - it's just an extremely common use case, and as far as my being the only user showing it outside Safari/Flash, this is factually untrue, see, e.g., MarkRHolbrook's post below.

I've been having a similar issue with my new MBP i7 15 inch high res anti glare, except it affects the whole display screen and not just in safari, here's where I've started a new forum if you can relate to this issue. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2674211&tstart=0

my screen looks like this: http://tinypic.com/r/30nkyh3/7 , http://tinypic.com/r/1zovl2t/7 , http://tinypic.com/r/30nkyh3/7

New MBP with GT 330. Used a little over one month with no issues. Today, while using Propellerheads Reason, I returned to the laptop in sleep mode and when it woke the entire screen was buzzy with artifacts. I closed Reason to no avail, and then tried to log off and back on to no avail. Rebooting sorted things out. Do I have to read the last 10 pages of this thread, or can someone tell me if I'm forced to return this to Apple? Thanks!

I've been following this thread for a while. It seems that Apple's current hardware diagnostics check out fine on MBPs with these problems, and there are stories of people who have swapped logic boards or full machines to find the same problem on the new machine. I have noticed that while I'll see the garbled screen initially when waking up from sleep, there's some forced redraw that gets rid of the initial problem. It seems like after updates to Safari and 10.6.5, Apple's engineers are possibly being more generous with buffer refreshes to mitigate some of the problems (resizing windows to smaller sizes also sometimes makes things readable again). Unlike some folks who think Flash is the problem, given the evidence of this happening in other programs, I'm of the opinion that this is likely something lower-level (drivers or hardware (perhaps overheating)). Why else would this seem to show up more often in i7 machines with high-res screens?

i agree that the issue is likely to be driver related, however the majority of users are able to reproduce the issue with safari + flash and resolve it (perhaps only temporarily) by discontinuing use of either or both or by downgrading.

by your logic, your solution seems to be that everyone should either switch to discrete graphics or discontinue use of their mbp to resolve.

how about contributing some test results, file a bug report, or if you think this is a hardware problem log a job with apple care instead of repeatedly complaining that safari or flash is not the root cause.

To counter the arguments that this is a problem related to Flash 10.1, I've installed the Flash 10.2 beta and still see the same problems as before. In addition, I've also recently noticed them in Preview.app when viewing photos. This lends more evidence to my theory that the problem is either driver or hardware related.

I've had the same problem with my 15" i7 2.8 w/ high res anti glare screen.

I downloaded both the flash uninstaller and the flash 10.2 installer. Ran the uninstaller, then the 10.2 installer and restarted.

That was yesterday afternoon and i haven't seen any garbled graphics yet since then. I think it fixed the problem because the graphics were getting garbled quite often before i changed flash.
