Where does Skype keep al its settings?

I want to move my settings to a new computer. Does anybody know how to mover the settings? what files to move from where to where?

Skype stores files in the ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/ folder and uses com.skype.skype.plist in the Preferences folder.

If it was only that simple....

I have looked there before posting and the box is empty, unless you yourself put something in there. (BTW I do not have +Edit Profile+ but +My Profile+ but assume that is what you mean, or?

or to : Skype> Account > Show Account

I do not have acces to my wife' MBP at the moment, but will have a look when I have again. I just tested on my MBP and indeed it reveals the email you registered with.

There is hope. (BTW I do not have +Show Account+ but +Vieuw Account+ but assume that is what you mean?

Thanks Dirk, I will post if successful or not. Still if anybody knows where those Passwords are hiding on the MBP I would be more than interested. They must be in a file somewhere, possibly a invisible file.

Hi Dirk
Well your tip helped me get there. My wife had registered without giving a Email address (used to be possible in the olden days). So I had to do some jiggling but got there in the end. One thing I had to do was upgrade to the latest version.

thanks.

Still I would be interested how it all works and where it store the passwords.

See there is Skype Password in the Key Chain. However I cannot view the password in it (also not on a second machine). Maybe anybody knows about this phenomena? I have a post about it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2596212&tstart=0

Thanks everybody for thinking with me.

Hi

is there any reason to suppose that the password is stored locally?

might it not be kept on the servers, same as skype contacts, and same as say, many websites do, and the keychain item is, as its account name suggests, just a token or 'signed in' cookie ?

Not sure about keychain, but config.xml in Home/Library/Application Support/Skype/SkypeUserName/ seems to hold a lengthy secure key, and some shorter ones - so I'd think no passwords stored, just a digital entry permit.

Hi ChangeAgent,

Would you mind sharing how did you recover the password in the end?

I'm in the exact same situation (my wife's skype account was registered without an email address) and I can't recover her password in any way. If I try to add a registration e-mail under Skype> Account > Show Account it asks me for the password that she doesn't have.

Many thanks.

txm greetings.

I did not as you might have gathered form the post. I had to create a new account. This is what I found out. Skype, help, and the people who answer your mails, hardly deserves the name 'help'.

As you can see form this post:

There is no way of finding it in your computer (well if you really want to hack at it is probably posable). I am not sure why they use such complex encoding but maybe they are over cautious, after all you have potently money deposited with them and they want to protect the integrity of that.

So create (like I did for my wife) a new account, store the details in a safe place and happy talking to the world. I am sure there is a kiss in there somewhere.

PS. Should you be that ace hacker, well let us know how you cracked the code 🙂

Thanks for the response ChangeAgent, I understood from your previous post that you cracked it somehow 🙂

I've been looking for a while and I think you are right, according to this article, the password is stored on the config.xml highly encrypted and the only way to decode it may be using a brute force attack, which may take too long.

Thanks anyway, at the moment she can use her account just fine, because skype is set to remember the password, we may encounter a problem in the future when we have to change the computer, that is, if she hasn't remembered her password by then 😀

Good read.

What I sometimes suggest to people in this type situation is that you make a list (hand or computer) and start cracking at the password. (If on the computer) write it on your list and paste it in. Do every day one or two tries, and your memory might pop the real password (this is based on scientific research and I use this system in my work to solve more complex memory/brain related problems with clients). See part of remembering is that you need to engage and prevent the brain running in circles (in 5 days and most likely in 5 minutes) you do not remember is you tried your childhood goldfish birthday or not, or if you wrote the year in two or four digits. Give it a go, if you like, or better she would need to do it. You could make it a family game where everybody can write what they think it could be on the list and we cross of the ones that do not work. Winner gets to...., well up to her in the end is it not?

My wife said it was to much work and not worth the effort, she recreate her new account. All a matter of choice I suppose. Be well.

Where does Skype keep al its settings?
