iPhone 4 stuck in recovery mode, wont restore - Error (9)

Hey all,

At my wits end here, my phone froze on the train home tonight, rebooted it, and it came up with the connect to iTunes icon.

Looks like its in recovery mode and I cant get it out. Ive tried getting into DFU mode, different USB ports, different machines, different cables, re-installing iTunes AND RecBoot on Windows and OS X.

Is there ANYTHING else I can do?

13" MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.7), 1GB DDR 80GB HD

Apple has never claimed that they do not "moderate" these forums. What they claim is that they (Apple) does not people that are tasked with answering support questions on these forums. Many of us have gotten emails from the Apple moderators when our posts have gone over the line and violated the Terms of User. There are Apple users who post on the boards, but they are doing it voluntarily and as "regular users", not as official Apple representatives. In the previous versions of the Apple support forums, the moderators had purple Apple logos identifying and the employees volunteering their time had gray Apple logos. Now only the moderators have the logos (still purple) and the volunteers no longer have a logo. (I have seen one or two volunteers posting about losing the gray logo and were told essentially "that's the way it is now".

I agree Tom,

I'm in this boat now. I have Bricked my iPhone trying to do the iOS update and now I am doing all I can to bring it back.

I have recboot and tinyunbrella installed on my work machine now in hopes of getting this phone back up and running. The only reason i haven't used them yet is because I was still in the process of copying my iphone backup files off my powerbook to move to a machine that worked.

iTunes Died while trying up update... it won't load anymore... and after restarting and reinstalling a few times, Now the Hard Drive hasa SMART Failure... so copying the files (4500+) with errors ever 20 files or so has been a nightmare.

So, in finding out that Apple will not help me if i use these programs, even though they are suggested here many times... i guess i can say i am glad i have not yet...

I am fortunate to live fairly close to an apple store... I would hate to be much further.

I'll be going to one Wednesday now... Hope they can help.

I would rather they Fix the phone... and get my files back... if not... a New phone wouldn't be so bad I guess.

There is no legitimate way to downgrade iOS without hacking your phone or your computer. This is Apple's tip on that error: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error21 but it assumes that the phone has not been hacked. Give it a try anyway.

You can also check to see if your attempt to downgrade corrupted the network database on your computer. Open your hosts file and if you see any lines that contain gs.apple.com remove the lines. In Mac OS X the hosts file is in /etc/hosts. In Windows (any flavor) it is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts..

i have the same problem with my phone, i have it for a year and a half (its guaranteed for two years) but there's no apple store in Ireland, just registered apple sellers or whatever, so i'm trying to figure out if i should bring my iphone there or to the place where i bought it (the shop where i bought it is not affiliated with any network) in the hope that either one of the stores will either fix it or give me a replacement?! what do you think seeing as how you've been through the process? thankss!
