iPhone 4 / iOS 4 - Location Services Always On

I tried searching the forums but can't find this one: Earlier today I noticed that the little arrow icon was up in my top bar, indicating that something is using the location services. The problem is, there are no apps running, not even in the background.

I've powered the phone off and on a few times, but the icon is still there. If I turn off location services it goes away, but immediately springs back when location services are turned back on.

So what the heck is accessing my location and how do I get it to stop?

TWC app was giving me this issue too. It looks like they have released an update to fix the problem. Now I don't see the purple arrow using the app, even when I told it to find my current location, so I have to wonder if they fixed it always using location service, or just somehow disabled the arrow showing up. Guess I'll see if my battery life returns to normal or if I need to shut off location service for TWC.

so i actually ended up walking into genius bar today. they couldn't figure out which program was causing the glitch either, but the way they solved it was by resetting all the location service permissions altogether. for those of you who want to know how to do this, navigate to "settings > general > reset > reset location warnings".

also fyi, the apple service rep told me the purple location service icon next to each app simply signifies that particular app has requested your location within the past 24 hours, not necessarily that the app is active.

hope this helps those with the same problem as i had.

Hey thanks for the tip. It was driving me crazy.

That's actually incorrect. The "key" right in the location services menu says that a purple arrow indicates an application currently using your location, while a gray is for any app that has done so in the past 24 hours.

After poking through the menu, I found out that the system service "Compass Calibratiin" is the culprit for me...

iPad iOS 5 has same issue:

I have discovered it is my system services- date & time. It is set to update automatically, and it is always running. I hve tried turning on and off location services, turning on and off set automatically, changing date manually and then turning back on set automatically, still no luck. After turning everything back on, it is always running.

Any one else find a fix??

For those of you on IOS 5, I found that if you set a reminder to notify you based on location, location services will be on untill that task is marked as completed, even if the Reminders app has already notified you of the event and the app is closed. The task must be checked before the app will disable location services.

Maps did this for me. Kept toggling it's location permissions with no luck. Rebooted the iPhone 4 on iOS 5. Quit maps; nothing happened. Quit Settings; nothing happened. Rebooted device again, went to the location settings, and it turned off.

Started maps again, received location, quit maps, and it stopped location services as it should.

Seems like a strange bug. I've yet to install the 5.1 update.
