iPod Touch 4G not detected in iTunes 10.0.1.22 when using Remote App 2.0

I'm guessing Apple's Remote App 2.0 works well for iPhone 4 and iPad, but when I try using it with iPod Touch 4G, it does not show up in devices to enter the passcode.

same wifi network
iTunes 10.0.1.22, Home Sharing On, Library Sharing enabled, Looking for remotes enabled.

iPod Touch 4G (iOS 4.1) (no problems with wifi)
Apple's Remote App 2.0 Home Sharing login works well. Adding Library produces 4 digit passcode.

BUT, again, it does not show up in Devices to have the opportunity to enter the passcode.

iTunes is an approved app in firewall settings.
Win 7 (32bit) Network Detection/Printer&File Sharing is enabled.

Interesting:
When I try to connect to Airport Express with my PC,
I receive "unknown error (-15006)"
Another iMac running iTunes 9 is able to stream music to the airport express without problem.
Using my PC, I'm able to connect to the iMac, and stream music from the iMac to my PC.

When Airport Utility (on PC) is open I can't detect Airport Express (even though the light is solid green.

I'm still guessing iTunes 10.0.1.22 has AirPlay/AirTunes issues, and in general doesn't want to detect any wifi devices.

I haven't yet looked up the error code, but would love to hear some thoughts out there.

Anyone else have similar issues? Are there any fixes?
Please share.
Thanks.

I decided to be brave, even if reluctantly.
Scoop : no success at all. Mostly waited time and more loss.

Here's what I did, just in case someone would think that everything would get fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling everything.

1- I uninstalled completely my firewall (Comodo) and scrubbed my registry to remove everything.

Result : iPod's Remote app still wouldn't connect to iTunes. Wouldn't connect to MediaMonkey either. Fine... I expected that since 1) it used to work before upgrading to version 2 and iTunes 10, 2) I had disabled the firewall before with absolutey no positive results.

2- Keeping my windows box without any firewall protection, I proceded to uninstall *everything related to apple* : a- iTunes, b- Apple Mobile Device Support, c- quick time, d- Bonjour, etc.

Note that :
a- Bonjour didn't uninstall by itself. I had to stop the service, unregister it, restart my comp. and delete the folder. Fieww.
b- *Apple Mobile Device Support* didn't want to uninstall either, so I had to redirect the installation program to the original *.MSI, and from there it went okay.

3- After a) restarting the computer, b) with nothing running in the background, *no firewall or even anti virus*, c) I reinstalled iTunes. This, of course reinstalled Bonjour, Quicktime, and iTunes. Fine.

4- I fired iTunes, plugged in my iPod : iTunes tells me that it can't use my iPod because the "required software wasn't installed", and that I have to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (great)

5- Uninstalled iTunes again, reinstalled it (shaking my head in complete disgust...) -- no applications is running in the background. None.

6- Reinstalled iTunes. I noticed that this time it reinstalled the iPOd service, which was probably missing from the previous installation. Go figure.

7- Fire iTunes again : still can't find my ipod when I plug it. *At all*. Closed it three times and reran it... Ah! it finds it. But.. Surprise : all backups, etc. are gone. No more saved apps, etc. User friendliness at its best.

Ok but let's stick to the most important...(!?) : *did the remote app finally connect* ? _*No. It didn't.*_

It didn't connect to MediaMonkey, it didn't connect to iTunes. No firewall is even installed or running. Even the Windows firewall isn't running.

No, it isn't my router. Sorry...

_*What can it be then ?*_

I believe I tried everything reasonable -- except reinstalling Windows, etc. which would be totally stupid. I also believe that you probably had a different type of problem then most of us.

Please leave this thread running as I believe more will come trying to find a solution. Maybe someone will have some brilliant idea. Or maybe will Apple silently publish a fix while letting us loosing our time ? 🙂

Arc, I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with this!!!
I can imagine your frustration now.

I'm not too familiar with comodo, though I'm sure it is a respectable firewall.

When I went through this process, I did NOT uninstall my firewall. I only disabled it during the installation process and deleted a few app rules, then reenabled it so that AVG could recreate them back to default during app startup (before I had tried granting full access to all those apps without success.). I also did NOT directly change my registry, Bonjour, QuickTime, or Apple Mobile Device Support. I tried trusting the iTunes application installer to handle those for me. I simply used control panel/programs/iTunes/uninstall and the itunes installer to manage the whole process.

I assume you are knowledgable enough to be modifying your registry directly, and that things just aren't working as you intended.

I'm also guessing that your OS might be getting in your way.
You may want to create a new computer admin account to test all of this with a clean account.
If that doesn't work for you you may consider an archive install of your OS to repair any other factors.

Once you know your registry is okay, a clean install of iTunes and airport should still work for you.

I really didn't do anything special or complicated, so you shouldn't need to go to such difficult lengths to fix this.

Again, I'm sorry you are experiencing so much trouble with this, and know my suggestions aren't the most helpful at the moment, but I do hope they do offer you some assistance moving forward.

Please continue to share any progress. I'm really hoping someone here may be able to help you solve this.
Best of Luck!!

Clearly there are some specific issues with the new Remote app here, but is anyone having general Wi-Fi issues with the new app. None of my hardware has changed, but since I downloaded Remote 2.0 the connection to my Apple TV and/or PC (Windows 7) is definitely more flaky than before. Drops the connection far more frequently, although always keeps playing.

Using iPhone 4 and iTunes - everything at the latest versions possible.

Thanks for your message GuestG4 -- you're a real gentleman.

Scoop : everything is back to normal now. And more... 🙂

Comodo is a good firewall, some rate it as the best in class. However, best or not, good or not, I had uninstalled it to make sure nothing was getting in the way of any network connection. It's the only way to be sure as some firewall, even when disabled, can still block ports, etc.

I did not directly change my registry but used revo uninstaller. Note that I also know my way through the registry.
The reason I uninstalled every apple software is that iTunes had already been reinstalled after an uninstallation... so I thought I'd do things differently this time, to make sure I'd have the latest version of every software.

=====

That said, yesterday afernoon, I decided to ditch my expired NOD32 antivirus (a way overdue task) and installed the great and free Microsoft Security Essential. A bit later, I decided to see if there were any updates for MonkeyTunes, a plugin allowing users to use the Apple remote app to control MediaMonkey. Surprise, there was one. So I downloaded it and installed it.

MIRACLE (or almost) : the remote app connected to MediaMonkey and I could insert the four digits in the appearing dialog. So I thought, "let's try iTunes". MIRACLE : iTunes connected too : the iPod magically appeared under the device section (without being USB connected), and the dialog to enter the digits appeared too.

I've been working with computer for 20 years, I script and develop small applications from time to time... And computer's behaviour still flabbergast me. I honestly have no idea what so ever of what happened : why did the remote app finally connect to iTunes ? Yes, I updated a MediaMonkey plugin... But the developper told me this had no impact on iTunes.

The Remote App now works perfectly.

Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling everything finally had a positive impact. But the fact is : the remote app still wasn't connecting the night before. And only 2 things changed since then : the antivirus and MediaMonkey's MonkeyTunes.

I'll be curious to see how others solve this connection problem.

Like others have said : there's something about this knew remote app version!

Arc,

congratulations! I'm glad you were able to make this work!
Thanks for sharing your progress.

Lisa,
I'm sure Apple is aware of this issue, and will release an update sometime "soon".
From what I hear, they just released an iTunes 10.1 Beta 2 update to their developer community for testing (but I don't know if they were specifically addressing this issue).

In the meantime, if you are up for it, you can follow our steps above to complete a full uninstall/reinstall of iTunes 10 to repair this issue. So far, this seems to be working for many people. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about how to do this.

Thanks

Apple Remote App update version 2.0.1 was released today, and so far seems to be working well with Home Sharing.

The only odd things I experienced were an inability for airport utility to discover my airport express. I had to quit/restart airport utility about 5 times and hit the "rescan" button about 20 times for the airport utility to finally discover my airport express. From there iTunes was able to discover my airport express, and then the Remote App as well. Control functionality of iTunes seems to work well from the beginning, but did not show my airport express speakers until this was resolved.

According to thier update version notes:
*includes stability and performance improvements.
*improves performance using Remote on an iPhone when Bluetooth is enabled.
*addresses a problem browsing artists with a large number of albums.
*addresses some issues waking up computers when using Home Sharing.
*addresses some issues with connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV when using Home Sharing or a Passcode.
*addresses some issues with connecting to a wifi network.

So there it is.

Please let me know how this update works for all of you. I'd like to see if it resolves issues for those who didn't uninstall/reinstall/make any changes to their computers.

Oct 16, 2010 11:45 AM in response to MikkyX

MikkiX,

If I recall, you're using iPT3 (iOS4.1)/ iPad (iOS3.2.2) on an iMac (10.6).

From what you mentioned earlier, I don't believe you have yet tried to perform an uninstall/reinstall of iTunes 10. If this is true, please give this a try.

I also wonder if you are able to downgrade to iTunes 9.2.1 and continue syncing with iOS4.1. The iOS4.1 Software Upgrade Page>How to install>Step#1 directions only state, generically, "Make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes." It does NOT say you are required to use iTunes 10. Since you are using iPT3 and iPad, I don't believe you are required to use iTunes 10 for those devices, so downgrading back to iTunes 9.2.1 might be another option for you.

Hope this helps!

Let us know what happens.

Thanks.

Hey,
I'd like to go back to my post from 1.10 and the problem I described there with the AirPort connectivity under Windows Vista.
Yesterday, finally, I solved the “my” problem! The connection iTunes 10.0.1.22 to the AirPort-speakers works now like it did before!
Some of you suggested uninstalling iTunes and any other Apple related software. I didn't want to make the effort since it was obviously a windows-firewall problem (I followed other tips and could confirm). So I tested with the windows firewall entries and finally decided to reset it to the default settings!
And now it works perfectly!
Of course, every software needing to access the internet will ask again to be allowed to do so, but that's not bad - it helps cleaning the firewall!
My guess, the problem is indeed within the iTunes installation. However, the issue is in my opinion not iTunes itself but just the adjustments the installation makes to the windows-firewall entries!

Thanks everyone for your help 🙂
Hope I could help, too!

PS: I never had any problems with iPhone 4 and the iTunes Remote App (always latest version)! I guess the problems there must lie in the WiFi settings!

CG72,

Thanks for your input. You might very well be correct. If this is true, than I'm assuming that the mac version of iTunes 10 might be causing the same/similar issue to the Mac OS X firewall as well. That might explain why mac users still experience the same issue when their native firewalls are turned off. Unfortunately, they can't just uninstall/reinstall their firewall itself.

I have yet to hear from mac users who have tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes 10 for mac. I would love to hear how this works for them. So far, we have only heard success stories from PC users.

Any mac users out there? Please share your experiences with this.

Thanks.

Same issue here, unable to locate library. Used to work flawlessly.
I have completely uninstalled all signs of apple software, itunes, bonjour, qucktime etc. After reinstalled still now working. I get the iphone detected, I am able to enter the passcode but it never connects to the library. However, the remote does work on some systems see here all on my home network:

1. Windows 7 64-Bit Desktop (Ethernet) - Cannot locate library
2. Windows 7 32-Bit HTPC (Ethernet) - Cannot locate library
3. OSX Macbook Pro 13" (Wireless) - Working perfectly
4. Windows 7 64-Bit on Bootcamp (Wireless) - Working perfectly

The only thing I can think of is that something is affecting only the WIRED network connections. System numbers 1,2 and 4 above use the exact same library, located on a network share but only the Bootcamp connects properly.

Hopefully we can sort this out, it's quite annoying as it worked perfectly until itunes 10.

I posted under another thread but I have the very similar symptoms but under the opposite circumstances. It works perfectly on my Windows 7 desktop (hardwired to network) but not on my Macbook Pro (wireless). However if I hardwire my Macbook Pro to the network, it will also work flawlessly.

When wireless on my Macbook, it always allows me to enter the passcode but will only find the library maybe 20% of the time and then will shortly disconnect. I've tried disabling the firewall, reinstalling, etc but no change.
