Unwanted: Remote controls both AppleTV and Computer at same time

How do I get the remote to stop controlling my Computer, and only control my AppleTV?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Quick tip for others out there b/c this step almost tripped me up. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Advanced (the step I almost missed) > check "Disable remote control infrared receiver". And, as previously stated, make sure you unlock it to be able to make the changes first.

But thanks gfw123! This issue's been bugging me for months!

Tim's suggestion worked perfectly for me. About a week ago I disabled IR remotes for my desktop iMac BUT what I really wanted was to stop my Apple TV remote from controlling Mac (not all remotes). So... I used the pairing technique (after unchecking "Disable remote control...") suggested and my computer remote works with it and A-TV remote works only with A-TV.

Here's how to fix this issue on a third generation rev a, AppleTV:

1. On your AppleTV home screen navigate to the SETTINGS icon, click on that.

2. Select GENERAL under the settings menu. (first one on the screen)

3. Scroll down to REMOTES and select it (5th one down from the top of the list)

4. Select PAIR APPLE REMOTE (first one on the screen)

That's it. You can easily unpair the remote if you'd like at a later date.

Psych-grad's answer is the closest... these are the steps, step by step...

1) open SYSTEM PREFERENCES

2) Under Personal open SECURITY & PRIVACY

3) Within Security & Privacy, make sure the GENERAL tab is selected, click on the LOCK bottom left and unlock it, enter your password...

4) select ADVANCED at bottom right

5) select (check) Disable Remote Control Intrared Receiver... OK

You won't see the option to disable the remote right away. There's a few more steps after going into Security & Privacy that you have to take. BBbyTheSea's instructions were well laid out pretty comprehensive so I will simply re-quote:

"1) open SYSTEM PREFERENCES

2) Under Personal open SECURITY & PRIVACY

3) Within Security & Privacy, make sure the GENERAL tab is selected, click on the LOCK bottom left and unlock it, enter your password...

4) select ADVANCED at bottom right

5) select (check) Disable Remote Control Intrared Receiver"

Hi all -

This solution worked fine for me a few months ago, but last night, I discovered the problem has returned. :^( The only things that have been updated recently are MacOS (to 10.9.4) and iTunes (to 11.3.1). My Apple TV 3 has not been updated during this time, and works fine in terms of playing music or watching movies. The option to disable remote has been selected throughout these updates and is currently set. And my system has been rebooted several times over the past few weeks.

So - my guess is that something else has entered the equation, but have no idea what it might be. It's really annoying to have loud music coming from an iMac in one room while trying to watch a movie in another.

Any thoughts on where else I should look?

Thanks!
