Minor Video Stutter

I too am experiencing stuttering, but only on one downloaded TV series that is playing through my ATV from my MBP. Its the TV series "Outcasts" which was originally produced for BBC television. Has anyone else experienced stuttering with this show? It is noticeable throughout all episodes of the series, especially with the credits crawl at the end of each episode. What I find curious is that no other content I've played on the ATV has this. And this includes trailers for TV shows on other networks (such as "The Walking Dead" from FX) that stream from the MBP to the ATV.

After reading some of the posts here, I went into the settings of my Sony Bravia LCD TV and turned off "motion enhancer" and set "cinemotion" to "Auto 2" which applies an inverse 3-2 pull-down process to the video signal without any motion estimation. It didn't work. Maybe I should turn cinemotion completely off.

I'm really suspecting, however, at this point that the issue could be with the source material and not the ATV as all other content plays just fine. The TV series otherwise plays fine on my MBP and iOS devices. I like the ATV and plan to use it alot but am fearful of purchasing any TV series in the future that may end up displaying improperly on my LCD TV.

I've just bought a new TV - a Samsung 6000 - and am experiencing the stuttering on movies I ripped with Handbrake that are streaming from iTunes on my iMac. I have a Time Capsule for a wireless network.

I never had any stutter on my old tv with the same setup and movies. That was a Sony Bravia that only supported 720p.

I can eliminate the stutter by switching to "Game Mode", but that disables the ability to refine a lot of other picture settings, and the picture was unsatisfactory. I've turned "Auto Motion Plus" off, and it seems to have improved things.

I have the same issue. AppleTV 2nd, Samsung LED, MBP. Everything looks and sounds good, but every 1-2 minutes this this slight frame drop or jitter. Just slight, though. Most people can't tell, but once you see it you cannot stop see it! So annoying. I have motion plus off which means the 120hz upscale is off. I do not have it in gem mode, but we should not have to have it in game mode. It's clearly soe,thing with the files.

They are all ripped movie files. Al are .m4v coding a few are mp4.

This is really annoying. I wonder if it's a buffering issue?

So I noticed that after the movie fully loads it stops the jitter. Has to be a buffering issue! My home network is fine....I'll try wired just to see if it makes a difference.

if I watch any foriegn (primarily British) television shows via Apple TV, I get the sputter and choppy-ness. I tweaked some of the recommeded settings (cinemotion), and will keep my fingers crossed.

AppleTV 2 - 4.4.4 (3330) - TV Resolution 720p HD - 60Hz

Samsung - UN55D6000 - Version 001026 (Just updated) - Auto Motion Plus is disabled, all other settings are defaulted. This is a 1080p LED 120Hz set.

iMac - iTunes 10.5.2 (11)

Network - enterprise class gigabit Ethernet. All hosts are wired 1000Mb/s.

Here's where I see issues (stuttering, drops, etc):

Any content that is streaming through my AppleTV from iTunes. Content that has been ripped by Handbrake tends to look the worst. I produce a lot of video using DLSRs that is edited with FCP X and compressed with Compressor. This content actually looks the best when streamed with iTunes, but still produces some stuttering. Not much though.

Here's where I don't see issues:

Movie trailers. Content streamed from the Internet, such as Vimeo. Movies and TV shows purchased from the iTunes store, and then streamed over the Internet.

Ideas?

robemich, that's my situation, minus the ethernet (I'm using Time Capsule's wireless). My problems are only with Handbrake-ripped movies running through iTunes from my iMac. I've been watching a lot of standard def TV stuff the last few days and have not noticed any stuttering.

To follow-up on my previous post.

I have a second AppleTV 2 with the same firmware connected to the same gigabit Ethernet network and streaming the same content from my iMac that has been ripped with Handbrake, but the TV connected is an older Panasonic 720p 600Hz Plasma.

I have no issues what so ever.

Can anyone comment on using the AppleTV with a 55" Plasma?

I posted earlier about my own issues with ATV2 stutter on my 55" Panasonic. It only happens for me on HD and NTSC video. All standard res PAL (eg 25 frames/s 50 hz) stuff played fine. I tried everything and eventually concluded, as have other posters, that it is a 24 hz/24 fps issue. I can't hand on heart say where the problem lies - it could be ATV2 or a problem with the way my TV deals with varying frame rates (pull down).

In the end I bought a boxee box (which can play video at 24 fps) and have had no problems at all - plays pretty much everything stutter free.

Handbreake *****! I use iSkysoft iMedia Converter.

I have a fantastic update for Samsung LED TV owners. You mileage may vary, but this worked for me.

Menu->Picture->Picture Mode->Movie

Menu->Picture->Picture Options->MPEG Noise Filter->Off

Menu->Picture->Picture Options->Auto Motion Plus->Clear

Not sure if the MPEG Noise Filter actually did anything or not, but this combination is working for me right now. I have no drops or jitter with Handbrake ripped content streaming through iTunes. SD or HD content both look great. Probably 95% of the content was ripped with AppleTV or AppleTV2 presets.

Hopefully this works for others out there. I was about an hour away from returning my TV for a Plasma.

I have the same minor stutter problem and my TV is a Samsung LCD LN55C750. I have the options you mentionned and it worked for me too.

I was curious, so I resetted the Movie picture mode and only changed the Auto Motion Plus -> Clear and it worked too.

I think there is something about that option on Samsung TV's that creates that minor stuttering.

Just turn off all the motion stuff. Its not really needed. All it does it upscale the GHz to 120.

I noticed that the suttering stops if i let the movie load first then play.

this problem is killing me. what a pain. i just bought a new 55 inch samsung and began noticing the problem. I might end up taking the tv back---this only occurs with appletv movies i watch from itunes.

is this a samsung issue? are other non-samsung people having an issue too?

Turn off the "plastic effect" or "soap oppera effect" and it should stop, which is the Auto Motion Plus junk.

Also let the movie load first. My 55 inch Samsung LED does the same thing, but only in the begining while the movie is loading. Once it stops the TV is fine.

The AMP is a fake up scaling. That's why everything looks like c r a p when you watch it with it on.
