Minor Video Stutter

auto motion plus to CLEAR....worked!!! thanks!! cant tell you how annoying that was!

Hi - I had loads of problems with this but it only started when I upgraded from a version later that 4.3. I had to jailbreak and roll back to 4.3 to resolve it.

The option TV resolution was added in versions past 4.3 - not sure what difference this made, but it sure didn't work well for me. I tried every setting too and on many different TV's.

Also managed to buy an import Apple TV that was still running 4.3 out of the box and this plays fine too. Upgrade to any newer version and the frame jumps comes back.

I'm having the same issue too, (here in the UK so my screen is PAL)... and always on pan/ tracking shots and always happens on movies rented from itunes.... Never on Vimeo or similar that produce high resolution media.

Definately not my TV (Panasonic 26inch LCD) as it works perfectly with a number of other devices feeding all sorts of resolutions and formats.....

I have a background in broadcast tech-op's and this is absolutely looks to me like an ATV2 processing problem or an Apple encoding problem with the source material...

on my Sony LCD, I turned off the cinemotion effect and everything is wonderful ... and the setting seems to stick

I started having stuttering issues, Netflix also stopped working. I ssh'd to the apple tv and done df -hk and noticed the storage capacity was 100% full.

the path that was full was

/private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/AppleTV/Video/LocalAndRental/

the quick fix

rm -rf /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/AppleTV/Video/LocalAndRental/*Cache*

This fixed the stuttering and netflix works again

Since upgrading to 5.0 today, I have noticed the stutter is significantly reduced if not gone!! Really glad about this, as I was not ready to swap out to gen 3 AppleTVs. Drawback is the new ugly icon centric UI - let us choose between them in the settings.

Same for me. Latest update has resolved it completely. Very happy.

Well...see no. I just updated this morning and the stutter still exists. The only way to remove it is to take my resolution way down to 1024x 60mhz

That murders my resolution and puts the black bars back on the screen. However as observed, this only happens with Itunes Purchased and Streaming videos. Netflix, Vimeo, etc. all play beautifully and stutter free. So this ish is not resolved.

I'm getting the same stuttering. It does seem to happen after the buffer is full. I have played iTunes videos from my iTunes library, from my iPad and iPhone. The iOS device will buffer the whole movie to the ATV device (which is nice because if I get a call I can answer it without the movie stopping), and it will stutter every 5 to 10 seconds. It's very hard to notice but once yu do it's annoying. When the credits are rolling it is really obvious. I check to see if it was an issue with the tv not being able to update the screen as fast as it was being sent so I messed with what ws being sent from the Apple TV. Same thing. I'm running at 1080i 60htz. I see the LCD tv has a "jutter" setting for movies to video but I don't want to mess with it. Any suggestions? The picture is great, the network is fast. It was happening both with wireless and when the Ethernet was plugged in. Thanks

I too have this issue. Only noticed it when I swiched to a newer tv though. It doesnt happen during fast action. It happens when people are talking standing still mostly. The video will go into slow motion just for a second or so. Super annoying. All other inputs work fine. TV, DVD. Its only the ATV that does this. Tried a faster HDMI cable with no change. Turning the resolution of the ATV down from 720p to 480p seems to help a little, but is gainy as ****. My new LG has a TruMotion device. LG support said to turn it off. I did. No change. It has something to do with the refesh rate I am sure. What really annoyes me is that it worked fine with a 4 year old tv and not a brand new one. Time for another update from Apple maybe? Or maybe there is a setting I can tweek that I just dont know about. Any help would be welcomed.

i had the same thing with my 3rd generation apple tv,it skips a frame every 10 seconds or so,i managed to solve this on my 55" samsung led by turning off the motion plus option on the tv,hope this will help,good luck.

Had the same problem. ATV streaming from a Mac mini. Sony Bravia flat screen. Fixed it by going into the TV setup menu and turning off all video enhancement features for the hdmi input that atv is connected to. Works great now.

Same issue. When watching iTunes rental movies in HD , the picture stutters every once in a while. About few seconds scale. Its very annoying ! If I watch iPhone 5 taken videoclips with airplay , smooth playback and no problems at all !

Tried these and NO help:

* 2 different TVs (Panasonic Viera 55" LED and Grundig 42" LCD)

* turning off Panasonic "intelligent frame creation"

* apple tv settings (1080p 50hz , 1080p 60hz , 720p 50hz , 720p 60hz)

* internet with wi-fi and ethernet-cable (I got 100/10mbs)

* reboot apple tv many times and back to factory-settings

* change setting "send data to apple" off

* messing up in Onkyo setup

This is very frustraiding to trying solve this problem every day , hope to get some fixes to this.

What im not yet tried:

* Put the "lip sync" off in onkyo settings

* change the HDMI-cable

My setup is Panasonic Viera 55" LED-TV + Onkyo AV-receiver + ATV3 (tv and atv has latest firmwares).

Edit : Ive went to couple of home-electronics shops to look at the Apple TVs thats in the stand and for test use for customers. Hehheh , they all stutters and ****** picture :D

The salesman was embarrased and blushes when I say "the picture is lagging" :D haha

I think the solution to this problem is that Apple TV is simply so inferior and dont work smooth. That lagging/stuttering is ATVs feature...

I mean think about it, people have here top of the line televisions,Hi-Fi A/V-receivers,home theaters and other stuff very expensive and still the Apple TV ******** everything up ! I think that my atv3 be fitted to the thrascan and Sony or something else media player handles the job better. Play Station 3 no anything problems ever , and ive hasnt even look at the settings-menu...

Only thing that ATV is better that its beautiful desing and works hand-on-hand with my pad and phone,shame to throw it to waste becouse of this stutter-feature...

Okey , ive been now testing few more tricks. Today I reset the ATV3 one more time to "back to factory settings" . And staring it an a "new device" . Ive rented the movie "G.I. Joe" cose the dwayne johnson is bad *** :DD and for testing is the picture better / no stutter.

Okey , Ive start the movie and about first 15mins , same stuttering/lagging is on.. Then I check the TVs setting "Intelligent Frame Creation" called "IFC" again in Panasonic TV.

I messed this setting to off-on-off-on. Then suddenly when the setting is in "strong/full" mode , the picture is smooth and crystal clear tru high-definion ! Few very little stutter comes once in a while (approx. 30sek to 2mins) .

After that Ive did not dare to touch any settings. Ive watched the movie to end and the stream was ok. Not 100% perfect but enough fine for me.

When the movie was over , ive checked few scenes where I see very well the stutter problem. Ive put the IFC setting off and on and watch the scene over and over. There are clear difference with setting on/off.

Ive have no idea what happened when I messed up with the Panasonic settings menu and stutter is no more that bad :S

Ive recorded few test videos with my iPhone 5 , same scene with IFC on and off. The difference most clear seen in the ending credits.

Just look at the "ending credits" videos , its quite clear difference with those vids even recorded with iPhone 5 and uploaded to youtube ! In live , that difference is much more clear !
