HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Hi everybody! I also have this problem with ATV2 and a Sony Bravia KDL37S5500. Tried multiple HDMI cables, different ports on the TV, switching off auto standby, changing the start time (or disabling) the screen saver. Nothing seems to help. When it does happen, the picture returns to normal if I change to a different input on the TV and back again. Not an ideal solution!

I have Philips 32PFL3514D here in the US and am waiting on my new AppleTV to arrive. I have had the original AppleTV connected to this unit via HDMI with no HDMI problems.

I have however had the magenta screen problem with a DirecTV HR22 model connected to this LCD via HDMI. It wouldn't happen every 20-30 minutes but it would happen a few times per month - I could never get Philips or DirecTV to resolve this issue and my only choice was to use component cables.

I am hoping I don't run in the magenta screen problem with the new AppleTV and I will let the readers of this thread know either way what happens once my new AppleTV arrives.

Hello there,

I have the same problem with ATV2 and Philps 42PFL9664H. instead of unplugging the cable for me it is possible to switch to anther HDMI-input and then back again. No solution, but a bit more comfortable.

I talked to Philips-support and they where quite interested into all information about this. If they do what they said, they are reading this discussion now.

Here's the answer I received from Philips Support:
Das von Ihnen beschriebene Verhalten ist nicht auf den Fernseher zurĂĽckzufĂĽhren.
Ihr Anliegen wird durch den Apple TV erzeugt. Soweit uns bekannt ist, arbeitet
Apple auch bereits an einer Lösung für seine Kunden. Genauere Informationen
erhalten Sie daher direkt bei dem betreffenden Hersteller.

Quick translation:
The issue is not caused by the TV set, but rather by the Apple TV.
As far as we (Philips) know, Apple is already working on a solution. Please contact Apple for further information.

I received a 2nd Gen Apple TV on Wed Sept 29th - excited! Hooked up on Sony TV in Family Room initially - no problems. Then moved it to Master Bedroom with a, you guessed it, Phillips LCD 42 incher...took a while to recognize the Apple TV but once it did after resetting/replugging/switching HDMI it worked all day..

Next day could NOT get TV to recognize the Apple TV, replugged, swapped, reset everything multiple times. Called Apple - said they wanted to capture early field failure unit and set a swap out appt at local Apple Store.

Got new one yesterday - plugged in on Phillips and looked like it wasn't going to work...finally it recognized and we watched a few Netflix shows last night.

This morning - Phillips TV won't recognize input and I couldn't get it to work EXACTLY like it did before. So I marched it out to Family Room on other LCD TV (Sony) and it pulled right up - no problem.

There is definitely an issue with the Apple TV and the Phillips Television. I've tried all the HDMI ports and 3 HDMI cables interchanging them with my cable box(that works) my DVD player (that works) the ONLY thing I can't get to work is my Apple TV on my Phillips Television.

yikes.

It is not just Sony, Phillips. I have a Sharp Aquos LC32GD6U w/ AppleTV gen 2 connected via HDMI, no splitters, etc, tried multiple cables.
When TV is switched to HDMI input, it does not negotiate properly with the ATV, and the picture has the edges cut off and colors all wrong (very green and red).
If I go into the TV menus and switch the HDMI negotiation from "Auto" to "Manual" and back to "Auto" it will temporarily fix the problem, until the TV is turned off/on again. Then, regardless of the "Auto/Manual" HDMI setting, I experience the same problem.

The problem doesnt appear only on Philips. I have a Panasonic Plasma panel and when I hooked up the aTV via HDMI, didnt get anything on the screen. After that I changed the HDMI cable and now I could get the picture. Kinda looks like apple needs to provide a firmware update to solve this strange HDMI problem..

just got off phone with Apple Support (again) and was informed by upper level tech support that I just need to talk to Phillips and see if they can fix their TV settings and Apple can't make sure that their devices are compatible with all TV's. Up until now, I've been optimistic about getting this resolved with Apple, but it looks like it may be time to box all 3 devices and send them back and wait for the Google TV.....I'm VERY disappointed.

why did it work the first day and then not work afterwards? It's clearly possible for the two devices to work together - but not more than one day?

very VERY frustrated.

OK - called Philips support line - they are only open from noon to nine ET so hit their website. FOUND a firmware update for my TV (42" LCD) put on memstick updated TV....and NOW MY APPLE TV is working!

the REAL test is will it STAY working - but right now I'll take any sign of life as an ecouragement.

SEEMS like good advice from Apple would be to check TV manufacturer's website for any/all firmware upgrades to ensure you're working with latest/greatest OS for TV. I know, some of you are saying "Duh, why didn't you do that first?" Well if the Apple Techs are willing to ask me repeatedly if the unit is plugged in, which is a very obvious starting point, recommending a TV update would be next.

I've never upgraded a TV unit before - never needed to actually until now.

I'll keep posting to let you know if the fix persists. (fingers crossed)

W.T.F?? Thousands of small manufactors in the eastern countries are able to clone a fully functional and to all TVs compatible bluray player in a couple of days. And Apple doesn't achieve to get a functional device in 5 years???

If this is apples statement to this problem than you can't even call AppleTV a hobby. Whats so f **** difficult on implementing a standardised protocol? Apple do you need help? I have some free hours this weekend... How old are your developers? Are they only trainees?
