iTunes - Network Connection Time Out

I installed iTunes for the first time last week and it was working fine. I had some virus activity going on after the installation and after my antivirus software detected it, it seems to be gone. Then I had issues connecting to the internet with firefox and had to change my proxy setting. Since then, I have not been able to access the iTunes store. I am getting the following error message: iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection timed out. Here are the results from the diagnostic test:

Happily I have been OK for about a day now - hope everyone else is having the same result. Shortly after my access started working again I received an email back from iTunes support:

"Dear Jim,

Randy here. I'm sorry to hear that you can't connect to the iTunes Store.

I have verified that the iTunes Store is online and accepting connections, which indicates that this issue is related to your computer, internet connection, or local network. There is not a whole lot that we can do about connection issues. I can suggest that if you are using a wireless connection to try using a direct connection to the modem via an ethernet cable.

How ever some others things that people have tried are outlined int eh articles below and offer multiple suggestsions. This article outlines some of the likely culprits:"

Then followed a whole lot of web links - none of which really addressed the issue. I guess Apple are not going to put their hands up and tell us what happened, and maybe we'll never find out.

I've learnt a lesson on how dependant Apple products are to reliable iTunes access and that will certainly have a big effect on what - if any - other Apple products I purchase in the future. This was certainly not a problem with my router, computer or iPhone and I don't think it was my ISP so who does that leave?

Hello everyone 🙂

Just tried again on my home network and hooray, its all working again.

As mysteriously as it stopped working... it suddenly rights itself again. So much for all those companies involved blaming everyone else for the problem, thanks to who ever or whatever it was that fixed it!

Thanks to everyone for their input and support, apologies to the original postee for hijacking their question. Glad we all got sorted in the end.

Enjoy!

okay I have had the itunes store network has timed out thingy problem for quite some time and just like most my internet has been working but the itunes store hadn't been able to recognize that but... I have FOUND THE SOLUTION!!! At least it worked for me... here is the url for the steps that I followed

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1490?viewlocale=en_US

I own a windows xp and it seemed to work for now, by deselecting the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!!!

Your proxy isn't normal and is indicative of a malware infection on Windows. You should disable it.
Open IE, click Tools menu, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN Settings button, uncheck any boxes concerning a proxy server. Click OK twice. Reboot and check periodically to see if the proxy came back. If it does, you still have an infection. NOTE: If you have special network arrangements with your employer or IT guy, consult them first, otherwise you should be good.

I have the solution for this problem i have been trying to solve it for quite sometime. its simple in 3 steps.
1)reset your router
2)shut off your antivirus/firewall.(meaning windows firewall as well for pc users)
3)plug in and sync your phone and hit download only.when its done you unplug and plug back in and it will ask you to update and it wil do it just fine

hope this helps out

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having network timeout issues also...I am sooo frustrated. I know it is not the computer after self diagnosis, talking to dell hardware support for three hours, dell software support for three hours, and apple support for three hours. It is not my network because I got the same error message on a completely different network. Just bought the kids Ipads (2) and the software upgrade times out. I can download an app....Any ideas? I've tried, and the techies have tried all the normal stuff...

This problem is related to having your computer, Apple device, etc
(from your current physical location) being unable to resolve/connect to
the following site/domain names and their related IP address(s).

The following table is presented to help explain/clarify this issue:

Site/Domain name | IP Address
-----------------------------------------------------
phobos.apple.com | 17.250.237.43
deimos3.apple.com | 206.169.246.144
albert.apple.com | 17.149.240.64
gs.apple.com | 17.151.36.30
itunes.apple.com | 206.169.246.171
ax.itunes.apple.com | 206.169.246.139

If ANY of these sites/IP address are unresolvable (via PING for example)
then the ability/usability of Apple's iTunes (and the Store) will suffer.

To have yourself verify that (if) you can connect to these sites, you'll
need to open up a MSDOS/Command prompt window
and then type "ping" (without the quotes) and one of the (above) listed sites.

For example you would type the following at your command prompt:
ping phobos.apple.com (then press the return/enter key)
which (should) give you results like this:
pinging phobos.apple.com.akadns.net [17.250.237.43] with 32 bytes of data:

Note: Anyt response other than "reply" (like Request timed out)
indicates a problem resolving the site's name to an IP address
and (generally) has NOTHING to do with your (normally functioning) computer
as this is dependent on the ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you are
using to connect to the Internet (like Sprint, Insightbb, etc) with.

The 'key' here is that it's the ISP's responsibility to (properly) resolve
the site's name to (one or more of) Apple's sites.

If (however) Apple (itself) is (currently) experiencing a DDOS attack
(Distributed Denial Of Service) upon one (or more) of it's sites, then THAT
would explain a possible cause of the problem.

However I stress THAT is NOT the problem since I can connect from my Insightbb
(ISP provider) at home but (currently) can not connect at work via their ISP.

This is (also) WHY the "tag" of the FQDNSN (Fully-Quilified DNS Name)
is listed as [akadns.net] since that is the ISP/Router resolving the DNS name!

I hope that this has helped shed some light as to WHo's problem this REALLY is,
and will help to stop the Apple-User 'finger-pointing' game in it's tracks! 😉
