Sleep problem

Since the last security update, my G5 won't go to sleep unless I manually put it to sleep. I have all of the sleep settings in the same place as before, and have restarted the computer (which usually cleared up the problem in the past). I'm not running anything out of the USB ports right now. I'm using the wireless keyboard and mouse, but have been from the start. Any advise on solving this annoyance?

Doug, Did you see this? It was on another thread. . . Personally, much as I prefer to deal with causes of problems, for the moment I'm going to try NMS sleep and see if that works.

Hi, Steve, Karl, and George—

Good tip, Steve. NMS from Sliced Apple Software (or at versiontracker) sounds like very useful software — as they say, "for laptop insomnia." I'm glad to hear that it's working for you, Steve. I agree with you about solutions vs. work-arounds, but sometimes wysiwyg. . .

And if its solution evaded AppleCare and Apple service, I'm afraid the problem seems too subtle for me. So what follows is (I hope) of some help for you, Karl. . .

Problems with sleep and Energy Saver settings are often responsive to the "software fix" that George suggested. To confirm, this involves deleting the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file from your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder, restarting, (re-)adjusting the System Preferences—>Energy Saver settings to fit your needs (unlocking and locking the pane), and checking to confirm whether the behavior has changed.

If this hasn't helped, try these potential"hardware fixes:"
](1) Disconnect all external devices to confirm whether this affects the behavior. I fit does, reconnect one-by-one to isolate the interaction.
](2) Reset PRAM / NVRAM — described in KnowledgeBase Article 2238 or 42642, as appropriate.
](3) Reset your PowerBook's PMU, as described in Article 14449.
](4) Plug in your AC power adapter and run Apple Hardware Test (Extended Test mode) to see whether any seemingly unrelated hardware issue may be present.

If none of these measures helps, I suggest that you contact AppleCare at (800) 275-2273.

Good luck! — and please post back with your status,
Dean

I solved the problem However now I have the same prolem everyne else is having of it not going to sleep.

Here are the steps I took:
I tried this for my wake up problem, perhaps it will work with the sleep problem.

Reboot holding option Command+"P""R" let the box reboot four times while holding these keys. This flushes the perameter RAM.

After the Fourth BONG let off the keys and immediately hold option Command+"O""F". When you see a white command line like screen, let of te keys and hit return.
Type: reset-nvram
Hit return. you should get and OK!
Type reset-all
Hit return and the box will reboot.
Hope this helps.

Dear Doug,
Thanks. Did you get your computer to sleep normally yet? I tried to reset the PRAM as you suggested. I'd done it a day ago and it seemed to work which gave my computer a few hours of normal sleep until I persisted in trying to fix all the problems I saw (A MISTAKE!) I removed a Canon scanner's "button manager" and some Iomega zip drive software from my account's start-up folder.
Now I can't get the PRAM reboot to work even with me pressing the Opt, Command, P, and R while my husband presses the power key. I know Tech Tool used to have a PRAM reset function for earlier Mac OS's. Do you, by any chance, know of some other way to reset it?

Hullo Scott,
Thanks for starting this thread. I'm sure you're right about the logs but I don't understand what they're trying to tell me! Here's a sample from the system log from an hour ago. Obviously, something's in a rut!

I did find still another "problem" (after the Virex which I removed, I hope, and a Canon scanner-related piece of software which was in my "accounts" login folder which I trashed). The most recent discovery was that I had a version of TechTools (4.0.3) which I'd installed before installing Tiger. According to Micromat, et. al., it conflicts with Tiger. I emailed their tech support and they said to upgrade to 4.1.1. I did that, but I'm not sure that took care of all the previous pieces of code and they're closed for the holidays.
And, I still can't get the PRAM reset to work. I just used it yesterday so it isn't as if I don't know how! (sigh). I'm toying with the idea of starting up the upgraded TechTool, but am both worried - and busy.
Any and all suggestions welcome! And thank you both/all.

I am having the same problem of my computer not waking up from sleep. At first the problem was quite sporadic, but it it has been becoming more regular.

I have tried all the solutions that you suggested Roz (ie. using disk utility, resetting the NVRAM, deleting the Energy Saving preferences file, etc.) but to no avail.

I don't really want to call apple support because my computer is no longer covered by the phone service warranty.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Feb 6, 2006 12:09 AM in response to Roz Schneider

Thanx for passing that on Roz, fixed it for me.

On both my PowerBook G4 and iMac G5 the screen wouldn't go to sleep after I upgraded to 10.4.4 (I have the settings so the computers never goes to sleep unless I tell them).

I deleted the PowerManagement.plist, reset the NVRAM, re-did the Energy Saver preferences, and all is well!

Thanks again.
