Netflix pausing/buffering issues

Hey all!

I bought my apple tv yesterday, mainly for the purposes of watching netflix, so my parents can have the wii back. Everything works fine, youtube, flicker, itunes and so forth, but then when I would try to watch an episode of tv on netflix, every one to two mins it would pause for 30ish seconds and have the spinning wheel going, like it was buffering.

Has anyone else had these issues? If so, how do you fix it?

Thanks!

Was having this buffering, freezing issue. I had my AppleTV connected to my Netgear WNDR4500, first to the 2.4GHZ radio, than to the 5GHZ radio. Had the issue on both wireless networks. I just recently plugged it into a switch, which is plugged into a power line adapter (slinglink turbo) so now that it is wired, though only gets 10Mbps, as opposed to 25-30Mbps that it was getting wirelessly.

So far, no buffering/freezing issues. I haven't hard booted my AppleTV since I got it. Will update if I have the same problems again.

It definately is limited to the AppleTV. I stream Netflix from a BD Player in another room and an xbox that is wireless with no issues.

Ok. If this has been mentioned I appologize because I haven't read the 36 previous pages.

I had issues with rebuffering tonight. I agree with those that say it is on Netflix's end. My connection

Is about 3.2 megs/per second and usually runs ok. I tried every setting on the ATV and no change.

Wireless and wired. Two different units. Same result. Went to my Netflix account and changed my quality

Setting to "good" from "best" and is streaming now without issue. The PQ difference is not that drastic and has

been playing fine now. My opinion is the servers supplying the Apple devices are overloaded on the Netflix

end. When I changed it so they ate pushing me less bandwidth, the issue left for me. My 2 cents.

For everyone fighting with the Netflix streaming issue, you are not crazy or alone. I have a 100Meg connection, yes 100Mbps, and I still have problems. First step, hard code an IP On your AppleTV. There is an issue with DHCP, don't ask me what that problem is, I'm a network guy not software and like they say "If it's not on fire, it is a software problem".

I tried everything, including stripping my network right down, testing Netflix on the Wii, XBox, 3 different computers (2 Macs and a PC), an iPhone, an iPad, a Samsung Bluray player, a Boxee Box and finally the Apple TV. All performed perfectly fine with no buffering/pausing issues except the AppleTV. Being a total idiot, I was not content to simply use a device that worked, I insisted on making the AppleTV work. After changing wiring, wireless routers, numerous configurations, testing, etc etc etc.

I narrowed the issue down to primarily SD content. Most movies in HD would start up play fine, occasionally I might get a simple buffering period, usually none though. However when trying to watch tv shows (mostly SD content), it would start and the almost immediately pause and buffer. Then 10 seconds later it would start playing for a minute or so and then back to buffering. It would do this 5-6 times per episode, at least. After I hardcoded the network information under settings (stopped allowing the AppleTV to use DHCP), magically I could watch all types of content again without any real buffering issues.

Occasionally I get some buffering at the start of an episode but it is brief and generally only happens once, and not on every single media.

Long story short, there is no doubt in my mind that there is an issue with the AppleTV and Netflix, however I have made it work 99.99% of the time by manually configuring the network settings. I hope it works for you =).

What I found was one of the problems was making sure your devices are at 100meg/full duplex if you are at half duplex you will get pausing, I have a switch that was failing to properly negotiate full duplex even my connection out to the net was running at half duplex which means communiction is one way until there is nothing then it will communicate the other

I noticed something odd as I play world of warcraft and the pings from the client wer always over 150ms upwards of 300 ms when it was like this my Appletv was buffer. since fixing this a month ago no more buffering, and WoW shows 70ms constantly

I do not think this could be a DHCP problem becaise DHCP is just for IP address allocation and once your device has an IP it always has it

In my case, the problem is definitely DHCP, I have no issues with duplex or speed settings. FYI, DHCP is not permanent, in fact the average lease time is generally 8-12 hours, however if there is an issue with the implementation or some bug, the DHCP lease could request a renewal constantly, hense the Netflix issues. Of course this is an educated guess on my part, all I know is that when I stopped using DHCP, I was able to use Netflix ;).

Whatever happened the Steve Jobs philosphy that Apple products are supposed to be easy and intuitive to use? I have had problems with Apple TV from day one even with I Tunes movies. If there are specific operational requirements such as some are suggesting why isn't Apple disclosing this so potential purchasers can make an informed decision before they purchase the product? The reason I bought an Apple TV unit was for entertainment vallue not so I could make a career out of becoming a tech guru so I can spend endless hours trouble shooting Apple TV/NetFlix problems. And why does Apple appear to be taking the position that those who are having problems are on their own. Lion OS had all kinds of bugs when I first downloaded it. But in typical Apple fashion they are quietly being addressed in a transparent fashion. Not so with Apple TV.

It is different for every network, so I can't tell you exactly what to enter, but it you go into network settings and select "Manual" and follow the prompts, it should have all the info you need already entered, you just have to keep clicking next. If the fields are empty for manual, switch it DHCP and copy all the info that it shows on the settings page.

I have been using Apple TV for over a month. However, since couple of days when watching Netflix it starts to pause/buffer for 10-20 seconds every few minutes, which makes watching very painful. This problem starts to happen only after 45-60 minutes of watching Netflix. When I tried watching the same episode in my MacBook Pro it worked like charm with no issues.

Does it mean Apple TV needs an upgrade, or it is a Netflix problem? It appears more like a Netflix problem with Apple TV as watching it in a browser doesn't replicate the issue and I never had this issue since I bought Apple TV. It appears Netflix has changes something in the equation for Apple TV to behave like this.

I think the thing to remember is you only spent $100 for this Apple product. It works pretty good most of the time, and if the only problem is Netflix streaming, do as I do and use another source. My LG Blueray player gives me full 1080i HD and no problems with buffering or stuttering. I just use the ATV for itunes and Apple Store movies. Remember the old saying,"You get what you pay for!" Don't expect much in the way of customer service from a $100 product and an $8 bucks a month streaming platform and you won't be disappointed! It's like complaining about Facebook...it's free!

No offense, but that's one of the most worthless replies I've read. Don't give us the "you get what you pay for" adage. Apple priced it at $100 not us. Apple has a reputation for making products that are miles ahead of the competition & last for years. I'm sure if Apple wanted to make it $300, people would have purchased it. And Netflix was the flagship feature advertised, so excuse us if we expect that to work. I don't care if Netflix is only $8 a month to stream either. It's still a paid service! And given their recent price hike for DVD's/Streaming & current PR image, we should get immaculate service & quality. Compairing Netflix (a paid service) to Facebook (a free service) is absolutely ludicrous.
