Netflix pausing/buffering issues

Hey all!

I bought my apple tv yesterday, mainly for the purposes of watching netflix, so my parents can have the wii back. Everything works fine, youtube, flicker, itunes and so forth, but then when I would try to watch an episode of tv on netflix, every one to two mins it would pause for 30ish seconds and have the spinning wheel going, like it was buffering.

Has anyone else had these issues? If so, how do you fix it?

Thanks!

No I wrote "static IP address" (for your Apple TV2) and that's what I meant. Your DNS server address is always static, because it's based on what your told your router to use.

When you let Apple TV assign the so-called DHCP lease automatically, it picks an IP address for your device based on available addresses on your network.

Evidently there some problem establishing a connection between Netflix and Apple TV when tits IP address is assigned by DHCP.

When I set the IP address manually, so it's static, I haven't had any problem with stutters and stalls.

That said, I don't think you can set your DNS address manually and not set your IP address too.

My setup uses ATV2 with manual configured IP address, Wi-Fi networking, ADSL2+

I have had the same issues with a number of streaming services, both via ATV and via iPad and PC, though most severe symptoms have been when using ATV and Netflix. Most HD movies have been ok, but SD TV shows and some movies have been unwatchable.

On my router, I have enabled a setting called IGMP Proxy. Since making the change, all stuttering on streaming internet media has ceased and ATV is playing all Netflix content (SD, HD, movies, TV shows) without a hiccup.

If you have that setting on your router, it may be worth a try. Good luck!

Thomas,

Are you assigning a static IP to your ATV2 or your router? If to your ATV2 exactly how are you doing this? When I manually enter a open DNS .8.8.8.8 for example isn't that locking in a IP as well? If so it hasn't worked. If there is another way to set a static IP within ATV2 or if you were inferring it should be set with in the router please advise. Thanks much. If this doesn't work I'm done with Apple TV.

So I gave another shot at trying to stop the ATV from constantly buffering. I'd seen a post where someone had run 'Namebench' to see which DNS server was the fastest for them. I downloaded, installed and ran the app. After using the reported fastest DNS address to manually program the ATV TCPIP settings we were finally able to enjoy uninterrupted movies tonight on Netflix. So I don't know why the ATV is so server sensitive but it appears it is. So far so good.

Thanks Gareth,

I ran namebench, made the recommended changes and it did not work either.

What I think worked is changing the video quality in my Netflix profile. I set it to good quality (up to 0.3 GB per hour), I logged out and back in my Apple TV and It did improve by far the streaming. I have 6 Mb speed but that does not seem to be enough for Best quality in Netflix.

I used to have buffering about every minute or so. Today, watching the same movie (Toy Story 2), I've had three buffering pauses in 40 minutes.

Okay, I'm having this issue as well, to the point that netflix is unusable. Is there any way to check if the problem is the actual internet connection? (as in: the internet is more than fast enough, but only works in bursts)

Details:

I have my atv connected through an airport express (wirelessly of course).

My software is up to date.

My apple tv used to stream netflix flawlessly, but I moved and that's when the problem started. Also, back then it was connected through a different router (netgear I think).

My apple tv streams movies from my iMac via my airport express flawlessly.

My apartment provides free internet but it gets shared with everyone so I upgraded to a 10 mbps service but there was no change.

I tried to go on netflix to switch the quality setting to it's lowest level ('good', I think), but there was no change.

I've tried different shows/movies, but they all pause/buffer.

At this point, aside from checking the consistency of my internet connection I can't figure out what the problem could possibly be.

So ***?!
