Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

I am having a nightmare with iPhoto '11

1. Every time I open it, it asks me to upgrade my photo library. When it closes it saves changes, but comes up with the same upgrade message each time.
2. It hangs when trying to import photos from a file.
3. It doesn't see my iPhone (not tried it with another camera yet, but not hopeful)
4. Cannot open books I've already made, and when I create a new book, nothing happens - other than adding a new book under the project list. However, even this disappears next time I open iPhoto '11.

I am currently regretting upgrading at all!

I have restarted the computer and tried repairing permissions.

Yes this works. I tried this on an other machine. Problem here we had. In the photo library were some small avi-clips taken with mobile-phones. Converting this avis to ilife 11 causes the application to crash.
Problem was that we have iphoto_library on an external macmini-server connected harddisk. And here ilife11 kills / deletes ... or whatever it did, all master and original files .. puh:
We reinstalled all from backup, deleting the avi files with iphoto 8, then new iphoto was able to convert the complete library.

Issues I am having:

I cannot change the name of an Event if you are in the Event or are viewing all the photos. The only way I have found is to go to view all Events. Also, there is no button to split events anymore, you have to go the menu at the top and select split Event, there is not even a keyboard short cut. Sorting does not seem to be working correctly. iPhoto overall seem slower, especially when you hit a movie file in the iPhoto library.

This is now the fourth day of the install. I installed iPhoto 11, and it said it was going to upgrade my images. OK that took 2-1/2 days for 36,000 images. It then turned them into over 900,000 images. When I looked in the new library, all of the events were gone. There's only one event, where I had hundreds before (Ski Trip 10/09, etc). All gone. And every image was duplicated at least twice... some three times or more. And then because I used the "faces" feature on iPhoto '09, for some reason 11 imported every single face in every single image, so the duplication and faces import multiplied my images to nearly a million. I'm running duplicate annhilator (a 3rd party program that I had to buy) and it's been running for a day and a half. The little face icons will probably have to be deleted by hand. I am about to use TimeCapsule, format my drive and take my entire program back to the day before I had iPhoto 11. Thank goodness I use TimeCapsule. At the rate I'm going, I'm going to be installing this thing for a week.
Before installing iPhoto 11, and I STRONGLY urge you to stay away from this program, make sure you run a timecapsule backup just in case it hoses your photo library, like it did to mine. Thank goodness I backed up.

yeah thats right, the thousands and thousands that are having issues dont know how to use their mac's...and you do.

of course, i see no comment from you on the features that have been removed so it seems your happy with your software 'upgrade' is actually a downgrade. enjoy

unless of course, you dont know how to use the features of your iPhoto...try reading a manual or watching a video.

sorry, you will have to go onto youtube because your upgraded software's help menu probably wont load...as per mines.

My issue: iPhoto '11 can't open the iPhoto '10 library (at least it says so), when I open iPhoto '11 for the first time. The error occurs after a short library analysis preparing for library upgrade.

I repaired the permissions, same error.

Awaiting the iPhoto upgrade, which hopefully comes soon.

Apple, what's wrong? You're approaching Microsoft's quality standards (from a wrong direction, though).

Yes, differs1, I'm having the same problem with Time Capsule constantly running (60-some hours so far...) and out of space when it had plenty before iLife '11 came along.

Besides that, iPhoto '11 scrambled my Events AND it scrambled the photos within my Albums. Since many of those Albums contain pages of photographed sheet music, scrambling is a big problem!

I've owned Macs since 1984 and this is the first time an upgrade has been such a disaster for me...

Yes, these are real users with real problems.

I am running iPhoto '11 with few problems (although I don't like the changes), I am not a new user (I have run iPhoto versions since it first came out).

Perhaps there are some things true for older users:
- we might run Repair Permissions before installing new software
- we might be updating from the most recent version of iPhoto instead of jumping several versions
- we might be more faithful making backups

Nonetheless, people are having problems. And Apple dropped the ball on this one, it looks like.

Those who have lost photos do have a right to be upset - photos are precious. But they also should have made backups - because photos are precious.

I trust Apple will have a fix out soon.
