Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

I am having a nightmare with iPhoto '11

1. Every time I open it, it asks me to upgrade my photo library. When it closes it saves changes, but comes up with the same upgrade message each time.
2. It hangs when trying to import photos from a file.
3. It doesn't see my iPhone (not tried it with another camera yet, but not hopeful)
4. Cannot open books I've already made, and when I create a new book, nothing happens - other than adding a new book under the project list. However, even this disappears next time I open iPhoto '11.

I am currently regretting upgrading at all!

I have restarted the computer and tried repairing permissions.

Uhhh.. haven't got any of those problems yet... but these issues made me aware.
The issue I am posting is quite marginal:
My Internet connection at home is very poor (<1Mbit) and i am sharing it with the rest of the family.
When I try to create a diashow with places as theme it takes too long for downloading all maps perhaps due my crap connection. So far so good, but when I try to cancel this nothing happend. I had to press Cmd AltEsc to quit iPhoto... remebered me back to those Ctr-Alt-Enter days...

ILife installed on a MacPro 2x2, 8 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon and everything went well. The mac does not have a time capsule and collage has not turned TimeMachine. The photos in iPhoto were about even with 4600 videos.

I hope this post is useful to understand that mistakes and problems with iPhoto '11 is not systematic and widespread. In my opinion, depend very much on the situation of our iPhoto library and what it contains.

I am also having similar problems. Every time I log in a get the message that my library needs to be upgraded, I then click upgrade and a timer appears in the centre of the screen. This just then loads and loads and nothing happens. I have left it for 10 hrs and still it is just loading and loading!! If I then do some work on iphoto such as add some faces, then log out, when i go back all this work has disappeared. and I still get the message that my library needs to be updated. Whats going on...?

Thanks LizCastro. While I do recommend that people wait for Apple's official updates than making a mess using the trial and error method, there are people who just can't wait, as in the professional photographer who contacted me. For those people I do have the fix and it is * easy AND safe.* See: http://iphoto11.wordpress.com/
As for apple, they still don't know what's wrong because until thousands of people complain, they won't even invests resources on fixing it.
To ALL: Please send me a feedback if this doesn't work out for you!

Mine wants to update library also every time I start program. Also freezes when I try to trash. Does not recognize iPhone or Canon.
If I start iPhoto with option key I can create another photo library. When idid this iPhoto works fine. Problem lies with my original photo library.

When I did the upgrade I had some existing projects, two books and two unfinished cards. I think this is the problem. Somehow it corrupts library when doing the install with existing projects in your old iPhoto.

This is my guess anyway. I'm working with second tier apple support and hope to hear something soon.

This is a disaster. I installed iLife 11. When I open iPhoto, the library is present on the screen. When I expand a thumbnail and then try to go back to the Library the iPhoto and my computer freezes. When the computer finally comes back, the thumbnails are distorted like a television that loses its' vertical sync. The application does not respond and I have to do a restart. I've done the repair permissions Disk Warrior, Disk Genius, etc.

Apple what are you doing about this?
