Can Faces be turned off in iPhoto 11 ?

I have a very large photo library which I use for reference as a professional artist. I gave up trying to upgrade to iPhoto '09 from '08 because it just kept crashing after hours of trying update my large library. I decided it must be because it was trying to apply the Faces technology to too big of a library. So I am wondering if Apple finally has put the option in iPhoto '11 to turn off Faces before you update your library like you can in Aperture. I like working in the clean simple interface of iPhoto so I don't really want to go to Aperture.

I also hate Faces and wish it could be turned off. The reason I hate it is that it creates thousands of additional photos to have to either ignore or manage.

I made the mistake of creating thousands of duplicate photos. I have used Duplicate Annihlator. My library has over 122,000 photos so it takes about 2 days to run... but it does work.

Add my name to the list of folks who wish Iphoto would identify and delete duplicate photos.

You first stated that you purchased Adobe Premier, a video editor.

Today I installed Adobe premiere 10.It looks like I can delete all rubish created by iphoto11.

Then you get your knickers in a twist when Terence tried to point out that you bought a video editor with an organizer to replace a photo organizer which, when you consider it, is rather riduculous.

You finally got your act together and corrected yourself, without admitting you were incorrect in your first statement, by posting the letter from Adobe which adds nothing to the discussion except that it indicated you purchase Photoshop Elements 10 and not Adobe Premier.

So you have the gall to berate Terence for trying to point out, based on your first mistake, that what you purchased was totally not appropriate for what you were trying to accomplish.

Maybe you should start over with a new, empty library and reimport just the original files from your current library to get a new, fresh, working library. And then ignore the faces. Also, rather than rant and rave here which does no good, contact Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and request, like most of us have already done, that the option to disable the faces feature be included in the next version. That would be more productive.

Dear Old Toad YesI corrected my self that is right.Everything that is in the records is a indication of my true and honest stressed feeling with a product I was very much in love once. Apple iMac

and I am very close to dumping it soon.

What contributes to a discussion is not up to you to decide uppon.Unless you are the head of the support team.

This Terence is a very bad vollonteer for your forums and I told that and it still is my opinion .

He is useless and very unfriendly to an OLD man with some computer knowledge.

I have it wrong sometimes but not always .

I like to warn also others to reconsider a purchase of this very expensive malfunctioning stuff .Called Apple Imac

I feel very upset having a 2 year old system that can not even be upgraded to the next operation sytem generation.

MOUNTAIN LION.I have spend over NZ $ 3200 for a very bad supported piece of equipment.

When it came with Leopard and iPhoto 9 it was fine. After the SL my and many others problems started and there is a clear record under my discussions in your FORUM files to follow a client from beeing in love untill a start hating attitude.Amongst the discussions is also prove that YOUR helpers like to comment about my bad English and indeed my dear Old Toad that did not contribute to my love for your hardware and software and other faults.

Nothing wrong with You my dear old Toad but the stuff you comment about is not so good(anymore)

Even if it is a 'feature'... if it causes the program to crash all the time... it would then be considered a BUG. I have the same exact problem (iPhoto crashing ALL the time), and I really wish Apple had chosen to make it an option to turn it off.

Besides, even with smaller libraries, I have never once, not ONCE actually used any of the functions of Faces. IMO, it's just a CPU hog, and a huge bug that make iPhoto crash.

Replying to Old Toad's Apr 23 2011 post:

Thanks Old Toad.

This sounds like a plan.

I first posted on Apr 24,2010 about wanting to disable faces but did not get anywhere, so I'm going to try this.

Has anyone tried it yet? Thanks folks.

It is surprising that Apple still has not addressed this issue despite so many complaints.

Solving a non problem - but if you choose to do it be sure you have a good backup prior to making these changes - and be aware that this i s not supported and may not work of cause problems as updates/upgrades are made - best solution is to simply let the initial scan finish and then ignore it from then on - there is no security risk and very little computer time or disk usage
