Always ask the question was this the Software Update or the Combo update? Some interesting problem are sorted out by going back and installing the Combo update, no harm done in this approach.

Might be worth looking at this old thread as well, and go from there:

hope this solves your problem

Just for the record, after 10.6.5 all is well here with USB (I used the Software Update approach) with:

1. Sandisk Cruzer 16 GB FAT32 stick (iMac and MBP)
2. Sandisk Cruzer 8 GB FAT32 stick (iMac and MBP)
3. Elgato Eye-TV digital TV receiver, via USB (iMac -- didn't try MBP)

I can read data, watch TV etc.

Combo update - Repair Disk Permissions
i tried all, nothing worked

Usb Ports otherwise o.k (with Ipod; Mobiles; Printer)
several Sticks 4GB/8GB no problem

I think the Firmware on the Sticks is the Problem
the Sticks worked since 10.6.3 or 10.6.2 (if i remember right) - not before
it was a Known Problem

I have a likely problem here after updating to 10.6.5 from 10.6.4 our Philips Pocket Memo Dictation Devices are now longer mounted. The Audio part of the devices is shown in Sound prefs like in 10.6.4 and I can use them as in- or output device.

USB Prober shows the device like this:

Full Speed device @ 5 (0xFA233000): ............................................. Composite device: "Digital Pocket Memo 3"
Port Information: 0x0018
Device Descriptor
Configuration Descriptor
Length (and contents): 247
Number of Interfaces: 5
Configuration Value: 1
Attributes: 0x80 (bus-powered)
MaxPower: 100 ma
Interface #0 - Mass Storage/SCSI
Interface #1 - HID
Interface #2 - Audio/Control
Interface #3 - Audio/Streaming
Interface #3 - Audio/Streaming (#1)
Interface #4 - Audio/Streaming
Interface #4 - Audio/Streaming (#1)

but the Interface #0 does not work or 10.6.5 does something really wired.

This is how i found to fix the no USB issue when updating to OSX 10.6.5.

1. download the OSX 10.6.4 combo update.
2. download Pacifist
3. download kext helper b7
4. Open The OSX 10.6.4 combo update with Pacifist
5. drag over the following files to the desktop, AppleUSBAudio.kext, AppleUSBMultitouch.kext, AppleUSBTopCase.kext, IOUSBFamily.kext, IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext, AppleUSBDisplays.kext.
I know you probably dont need all of these, but i downgraded all of these kexts and all seems to work fine.
6. open up Kext Helper b7 and drag all kext into the app, put in your password, all should be good.
7. reboot.

hope this works for everyone!! did for me.

happy dayz!!
